The Capital One miles rewards credit cards earn travel rewards that can transfer to several airlines. If you’re looking for ways to book award flights with credit card points, Capital One can be an enticing option. There are multiple airline transfer partners to choose from.

What Capital One Credit Cards Transfer Miles?

There are currently four different Capital One credit cards that earn transferrable travel miles. Two of the cards don’t have an annual fee but have the same miles transfer options.

Consumers can transfer miles with these two options:

  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card

You can compare both cards in our Capital One Venture vs VentureOne Credit Cards comparison.

Business travelers can also transfer business rewards as well:

  • Capital One Spark Miles for Business
  • Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business

Capital One Airline Transfer Partners

Here is the current list of Capital One airline transfer partners:

  • Aeromexico
  • Aeroplan (Air Canada)
  • Air France/KLM
  • Alitalia
  • Avianca
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Emirates
  • Etihad
  • EVA Air
  • Finnair
  • JetBlue
  • Qantas
  • Singapore Airlines

Capital One also has Accor and Wyndham Rewards as hotel transfer partners. Like most of the airline partners, the transfer ratio is 2:1.5.

2:1.5 Transfer Ratio

The transfer ratio for most airlines is 2 Capital One miles:1.5 airline miles (10,000 Capital One miles=7,500 airlines).

Emirates and Singapore Airlines have a 2:1 transfer ratio (10,000 Capital One miles=5,000 Emirates Skywards/Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer miles).

Most mile transfers are instant. However, a transfer can take up to 36 hours for Cathay Pacific, Etihad, EVA, Qantas, and Singapore Airlines.

Admittedly, this transfer ratio isn’t as glamorous as the 1:1 ratio for American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards.

But finding the right award flights can help you get more mileage by transferring than redeeming Capital One miles for a travel statement credit. Transferring Capital One miles to airlines makes sense when the redemption value is higher than one cent per mile. That’s the redemption value when redeeming miles as a travel statement credit.

How to Transfer Capital One Miles to Airlines

Transferring miles to Capital One is pretty easy. Here is a step-by-step look at the Capital One airline partners.

1. Visit Capital One Rewards Portal

The first step is logging into your Capital One Venture or Spark Miles card account. From there, head to the Capital One Rewards Portal. You will see a variety of available redemption options.

2. Select “Transfer Miles”

The next step is clicking the “transfer miles” button on the rewards portal dashboard.

3. Choose Airline

Clicking the transfer miles button launches a pop-up window showing the airline and hotel transfer options. After choosing the desired airline, you can link your frequent flyer membership numbers.

4. Determine the Transfer Amount

The minimum transfer amount is 1,000 Capital One miles plus 100-point increments. It’s possible to transfer 5,600 miles, for instance.

Being able to increase the transfer amount in 100-point increments allows you to create “right-sized transfers.” You can prevent transferring more miles than necessary to book an award trip and potentially risk having airline miles expire.

5. Wait for the Airline Transfer to Complete

Most point transfers complete almost instantly with the exception of a few airlines. After initiating the transfer, Capital One deducts the miles from your rewards point balance. You will receive a confirmation message once the transfer is complete.

Logging into your airline loyalty account is also an easy way to see if the transfer is complete.

Like other credit card transfer programs, Capital One miles transfers are irreversible.

Some of the Best Ways to Redeem Capital One Miles

The overwhelming number of the Capital One airline partners are international airlines. But it’s possible to book partner flights with domestic airlines when you don’t want to transfer directly to JetBlue for local flights.

Aeroplan and Avianca are Star Alliance partners and offer United Airlines award flights. You can also book partner flights on Delta Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and American Airlines.

Like any credit card program, some airlines provide more value than others. Transferring to these airlines first can be a better use of your Capital One miles.

Avianca LifeMiles

Avianca can be one of your best options for flying to Latin America but also for booking Star Alliance partner flights. It’s possible to find United Airlines flights through Avianca.

Award space for Star Alliance partners is limited but can be worth a look for international travel (once the foreign skies can reopen for leisure). Avianca doesn’t charge fuel surcharges for carriers like Lufthansa.

The revamped Aeroplan loyalty program continues to be a good option for Star Alliance partner flights. Aeroplan no longer charges a fuel surcharge that keeps award ticket costs low. However, there is a $39 CAD surcharge (approximately $30 USD) on partner flight award bookings.

It’s also possible to add stopovers for 5,000 Aeroplan points on multi-leg itineraries. For domestic US flights, you can fly via United.

Air France

To book Delta Air Lines award flights, you can first transfer your miles to Air France FlyingBlue. There is an award flight estimator that can calculate the approximate value of points necessary to fly on Delta or other partner airlines.

Singapore Airlines

Transferring miles to Singapore Airlines lets you book United Airlines and Alaska Airlines partner flights. Now that Hawaii is offering pre-travel testing to waive the 14-day quarantine, flying from the US west coast to Hawaii can be desirable.

Other Ways to Book Flights with Capital One Miles

If your preferred airline isn’t a Capital One transfer partner, you can still redeem Capital One Miles on any plane ticket purchase.

Travel Statement Credit

The best option can be paying cash for a flight and redeem Capital One miles for a travel statement credit. As relatively few people are flying, cash prices for flights are low and there is less incentive for award flights. By paying with cash, you might get a better deal. Plus, you earn credit card points and airline loyalty perks in the process.

Each Capital One point is worth 1 cent as a travel statement credit.

Book Award Travel on Capital One Travel

If you don’t want to pay for a ticket out of pocket, you can book award flights with Capital One Travel. Orbitz powers this travel portal and you can pay with points or cash. Each point is worth 1 cent each, similar to the travel statement credit.

Capital One makes it easy to book award flights by transferring miles or redeeming them as a travel statement credit. The Capital One airline transfer partners are better for international travel but booking domestic flights on partner airlines like United, Delta, American, Alaska, and JetBlue is possible too. Before paying cash for your next flight, your points balance can help you out.

Can you use Capital One miles for any airline?

It’s only possible to transfer Capital One miles to approximately 12 airline partners. Many of these partners offer award flights with alliance partners like Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines.

When transferring miles isn’t an option, cardholders can redeem miles for a travel statement credit for most travel purchases including flights. The travel statement credit applies to any domestic or international carrier purchase.

A third redemption option is booking award flights through the Orbitz-powered Capital One Travel booking platform. Not every airline offers flights through this portal, yet, but many of the largest carriers do.

How many Capital One points do you need for a flight?

The number of Capital One points necessary to cover an award flight depends on the redemption option. Transferring miles can provide the best value but the redemption amount can vary. However, if the airline requires 20,000 miles, you may need to transfer 26,666 miles.

As a travel statement credit or future flight bookings using Capital One Travel, every 100 points equal $1. For instance, a $179 flight needs 17,900 miles, and a $500 flight need 50,000 miles.

What is the Capital One airline transfer ratio?

The standard transfer ratio for most Capital One airline partners is 2:1.5. The transfer minimum is 1,000 points meaning a 1,000-point transfer is worth 750 airline miles.

Two airlines, Emirates and Singapore Airlines have a 2:1 transfer ratio. This ratio makes every 1,000 Capital One points worth 500 airline miles.
