The following statement might sound like an exaggeration at first, but trust us, it isn’t. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card’s 100k bonus offer is one of the best signup bonuses available and the highest offer ever for the Sapphire Preferred. This is a bonus you don’t want to miss. So keep reading to see if you can qualify for this offer.

100,000 Point Bonus: Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

What is the Sapphire Preferred 100K Bonus?

The current Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card signup bonus is for 100,000 Ultimate Rewards. Qualifying applicants can earn the bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months.

This is one of the best credit card offers available.

100k Signup Bonus Terms and Conditions

Every credit card signup bonus has terms and conditions to distinguish which applicants are automatically disqualified for the offer.

Here are the current stipulations for the Chase Sapphire cards:

“This product is available to you if you do not have any Sapphire card and have not received a new cardmember bonus for any Sapphire card in the past 48 months.” (Source: Chase)

So, if you have gotten a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or a Chase Sapphire Reserve® and received the bonus in the last 48 months, you will not be eligible.

Who Qualifies?

Before you try, it’s important to make your card application count and make sure you qualify for this bonus offer. You may also want to check out our guide to the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Preferred application rules.

First-Time Sapphire Members

First-time applicants whose card application Chase approves will most likely qualify for this bonus offer.

Qualifying Previous Sapphire Members

Returning Sapphire members that are no longer a primary or authorized user can qualify for the signup bonus if it’s been at least 48 months (4 years) since receiving their initial signup bonus.

There isn’t a minimum waiting period between when you close your first Sapphire account and re-apply for a second card. However, you will want to make sure the account no longer populates as an active account on your credit card before applying.

Who Won’t Qualify for this Offer?

There are several instances when you might qualify for the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card but not the signup bonus.

There are two instances when you won’t qualify for this offer:

  1. You currently own the Chase Sapphire Reserve or (discontinued) Chase Sapphire Card
  2. You no longer have a Chase Sapphire product, but it’s been less than 48 months since you earned a signup bonus for the Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve

Existing Sapphire Members

Existing Sapphire Reserve cardholders must request an account downgrade to the Sapphire Preferred. You cannot have both cards simultaneously. While you won’t qualify for the signup bonus, you can maintain your credit history for this tradeline and avoid a hard credit check. Here’s a comparison of the Chase Sapphire Reserve vs Chase Sapphire Preferred.

When you’re a Sapphire Preferred authorized user on another person’s card, you must first request to be removed from the account. You can do this by calling Chase. Then, after the account no longer appears on your credit report, you can try for the Sapphire Preferred.

If you happen to have a legacy Chase Sapphire Card (no longer accepting new applications), you won’t automatically qualify for this bonus. However, Chase may offer an alternate bonus if you upgrade your card. Offering an “upgrade bonus” is a common practice for existing cardholders of a discontinued card to start using a newer product.

You Recently Received a Sapphire Signup Bonus

If you’re a returning Sapphire cardmember, you must wait at least 48 months after receiving your first bonus to qualify for a repeat bonus. This waiting period applies to the Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

For example, if you received a signup bonus for either Sapphire Card in June 2020, the earliest you can qualify again is June 2024 under the current offer terms and conditions.

While the 4-year period is double the waiting period of most travel credit cards, it’s not a “once per lifetime” offer like American Express enforces.

Chase Sapphire Application Rules

If you believe you qualify for the 100k signup bonus, you should also determine if you are eligible for the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

700+ Credit Score

Chase doesn’t disclose a minimum credit score to get the Sapphire Preferred. However, various online data points from successful applicants indicate you will need good credit or excellent credit.

Many consider a 670 credit score as the start of “good credit” and 740 as the beginning of “excellent credit.”

While some people get approved with a score in the high 600s, Chase may flag their application for further review. In these instances, it’s common for applicants to call the reconsideration line. They may also have to send additional documentation (i.e., income verification) to get approved.

You’re more likely to get an instant approval decision with a credit score of 720 or above.

Chase 5/24 Rule

Credit card churners must become familiar with the Chase 5/24 rule. This unpublished policy automatically denies your application for most Chase credit cards if you have too many new accounts.

As the rule’s name implies, you should only try for the Sapphire Preferred if you have opened or been named an authorized user on 4 or fewer credit cards in the most recent 24 months.

These cards count towards the 5-card limit:

  • Consumer cards with a preset spending limit
  • Store charge cards
  • Small business credit cards that report on your personal credit report

Some cards that won’t count against you are the American Express cards without a preset spending limit. No Preset Spending Limit means your spending limit is flexible. Unlike a traditional card with a set limit, the amount you can spend adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment, and credit history.

Reports also indicate the Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, Ink Business Cash® Credit Card, or Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card (all some of the best Chase business credit cards) won’t count against you.

Frequent Chase Credit Card Applications

You should only try for two Chase credit cards in a rolling 30-day period. It can be better to wait at least 3-6 months between applications to give Chase time to determine your payment history and to let your credit score increase from the recent account opening.

Pre-Qualified Chase Offers

You might receive messages or mail invitations to try for this card if you’re an existing Chase customer. This correspondence states that you’re pre-qualified for the Preferred when the bank performs a soft inquiry on your credit history.

Of course, Chase may decide not to approve your official application after they perform a hard credit check and take a closer look at your creditworthiness.

Do You Qualify for the Sapphire Preferred 100k Offer?

Here is a quick checklist to see if you qualify for this 100k signup bonus:

  • Have not earned a Sapphire signup bonus in the last 48 months
  • Are not an active primary or authorized user on a Chase Sapphire product
  • Have good or excellent credit
  • Have opened 4 or fewer credit cards in the past 24 months

If you have these four credit traits, your approval odds for the Sapphire Preferred can be very good.

Of course, these are not the only factors that Chase looks at. You should also reduce your debt-to-income ratio and minimize the credit utilization ratio on your other cards as much as possible before applying.
