Weather Delays and Flight Cancellations

Trip delay insurance is a complimentary benefit with many travel rewards cards. This benefit covers delay-related travel expenses that your airline doesn’t cover. Some examples might include hotel nights, clothing, and toiletries.

Although you’re probably more focused on the rewards points when you choose a new credit card, this benefit can also be extremely valuable when you use it.

What Does Trip Delay Insurance Cover?

Every credit has different coverage policies, but there are a few similarities with every card.

  • Can get a reimbursement for personal expenses not within the coverage of the travel provider
  • Coverage be in addition to a separate travel insurance policy
  • You can get a reimbursement for up to $500
  • Most credit cards only reimburse you and your family members
  • The delay must exceed the number designated hours or require an overnight stay

When you’re ready to make a claim, you usually have 60 days from the delay date to submit your information. You will need to contact the credit card company to initiate the claims process.

Several credit cards have recently devalued their trip delay insurance to only covering you and your family members. In the past, the benefits extended to anybody traveling with you if their ticket was purchased with your credit card.

Try Flexible Travel Rewards Credit Cards First

In most cases, each ticketed passenger can be reimbursed up to $500 for related expenses. For the most part, you will need to carry a card issued by Chase or Citi to get trip delay insurance.

If your trip gets canceled, you might even get reimbursed for your non-refundable travel expenses too.

Of course, you need to pay for a portion of the travel purchase with your credit card to be eligible for these benefits.

If you’re delayed at the airport, take the opportunity to visit a Priority Pass Select lounge with your free membership too.

Filing a Trip Delay Insurance Claim

When you need to file a claim, you will need to show written proof that the carrier didn’t provide compensation already and the delay reason. Just because there was a six-hour delay doesn’t mean you automatically qualify for a $500 trip delay reimbursement. Your trip still has to have a delay to be a valid reason in your credit card benefit policy guide.

Submitting as much information the first time helps ensure you get approval for your claim as soon as possible.

Summary on Credit Cards with Trip Delay Coverage

Certain travel credit cards offer trip delay insurance benefits up to $500 for you and your family. Depending on the travel credit card, your travel must have a delay of at least six to twelve hours before you can submit a claim. You’ll be glad you were able to use one of these cards to book your trip.
