We all want to get the best deal while shopping, especially on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. However, with the prices constantly changing, it can be hard to know when to buy. Will Cyber Monday deals be better than Black Friday? Or will Amazon suddenly discount the exact same item an hour later? It’s almost impossible to tell and can be frustrating if you’re looking for the best deals.

What is price protection?

That’s where price protection comes in. Price protection is like insurance against a price drop. So, if you bought a sweater for $50 with your credit card but later saw the same sweater for $25, you can use price matching to pocket the $25 difference.

Price protection is not to be confused with purchase protection, which is like insurance against theft or damage.

It’s kind of like how many retailers have a price match guarantee. If you find a lower price after you make your purchase, your credit card issuer will reimburse you for the difference. This can save all that headache on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Cutting Price Protection

The credit card landscape has changed a lot over the last year in regards to price matching. Discover, Citibank, and Mastercard have all cut their price protection perks recently. One of the main reasons card issuers have cut them is due to “lack of use.”

Let’s look at the best price matching credit cards you can still use on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Four Credit Cards With Price Matching

Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card has one of the best price matching policies out there:

  • 120-day claim window
  • Up to $250 per item
  • 4 claims per 12 months

Though the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card is similar to the other cards on the list, it also has incredible perks for the savvy consumer. It offers:

  • 4% cash back on dining and entertainment
  • 2% on groceries
  • 1% on all other purchases
  • Earn $300 in cash rewards after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening
  • No annual fee for the first year

A great perk is this card offers cardholders an automated system for finding potential price matching offers called Paribus. This means you don’t need to watch for lower prices, Capital One will take care of that for you.

Wells Fargo Visa Signature® Card

The Wells Fargo Visa Signature® Card has one of the most flexible price matching policies out there. Here’s what it offers, in terms of price matching:

  • 60-day claim window (this means you have 60 days to make a claim)
  • Up to $250 per item
  • Up to $1,000 per year
  • Unlimited claims

Whereas every other card on this list has a cap for the number of claims, the Wells Fargo Propel card does not.

That means you don’t need to prioritize your claim to the highest savings claims, you can file a claim for every little price drop to ensure you save $1,000 each year.

However, the claim window is one of the shortest, meaning you have half the time to find a lower price elsewhere.

The Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® has one of the best price matching policies:

  • 120-day claim window
  • Up to $250 per item
  • 4 claims per 12 months

The Barclaycard Arrival Plus covers both online and printed advertised prices. It also allows for an extra 60 days to file a claim from the date of advertisement. That gives you plenty of time to find a lower price and report it.

So, even if you do find a lower advertised price, you have two full months to see if there’s an even lower price before filing a claim. Note that this is also one of the best credit cards for travel miles.

This is one of the best credit cards for American Airlines fliers.

Which card is right for you?

Every card has its own policy. Therefore, it’s essential to know what does and does not qualify for price protection.

For example, these purchases don’t qualify for price protection:

  • Cars, motorcycles, boats
  • Auctioned items
  • Items for resale, commercial use, or profit
  • Collectables like jewelry or artwork
  • Taxes, fees, rebates
  • Live animals

This is not a complete list, so make sure to read the card’s policy.

Also, keep track of the claim window and how easy it is to make claims.

The Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card is our top pick because the process is straightforward, and you have a lot of time to file a claim. That ensures that you can always get the best deal.

If price matching is important to you, make sure you choose a card that offers this so you can get the best possible deal on Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping.
