Are you trying to understand the Delta Air Lines baggage fees before your next flight? How much you pay depends on where you fly, what seat you choose, and your SkyMiles loyalty status. You can see exactly how much that checked bag or carry-on costs to fly and how to avoid baggage fees.
It’s possible for you and up to 8 travel companions to get the first checked bag free on Delta flights. All you need is a credit card like the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card.
Delta Domestic Baggage Fees
Delta rose their checked baggage fees by $5 in September 2018. For main cabin seats, plan on paying $30 for your first checked bag and $40 for a second bag. Medallion members and Delta Credit Card owners get at one free checked bag. Premium cabin flyers get two free checked bags.
Below is a more detailed look at the Delta Air Lines baggage fees for domestic flights. These rates also include flights from the United States to Puerto Rico.
Your third checked bag costs $150. Checked bags 4 through 10 costs $200 each. Each flyer can check up to 10 bags.
Delta Air Lines basic economy is a no-frills flight experience but can be better than the other major airlines. One difference is that Delta (unlike the United Airlines baggage fees) gives you a free carry-on and personal item. Other airlines only let you bring a personal item and charge for the carry-on. Because overhead bin space is limited, Delta checks your carry-on free of charge at the gate, if necessary.
Whether you fly Delta basic economy, standard economy, or Comfort+, the checked bag fees are the same. Your first and second checked bags can weigh up to 50 pounds.
The first checked bag costs $30 and the second checked bag costs $40.
If you fly in first class, Premium Select, or Delta One, your first 2 checked bags are free on domestic routes. The weight limit for both bags is 70 pounds.
Delta International Bag Fees
The checked bag fees for international flights can get a little confusing if you’re in the main cabin. Premium cabin flyers get two free checked bags just like domestic flights.
Your baggage fees depend on your final destination. The further you fly the more likely your baggage fees are free. Each bag can weigh up to 50 pounds.
If you’re flying from outside the United States to another international location, look at the checked bag allowance for the current fees.
U.S. to Canada

U.S. and Canada to Mexico

This region also includes the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guyana, and Bermuda at this rate.
U.S. and Canada to Europe and North Africa
The first checked bag costs $0 for economy and Comfort+. Basic economy passengers pay $60. Your second checked bag costs $100 for all main cabin passengers.
U.S. to South America
The first and second checked bag is free for standard economy and Comfort+ seats. Basic economy flyers pay $60 for the first bag and $100 for the second bag.
If flying to Brazil, both bags are free for the entire main cabin.

Both checked bags are free.
This rate applies to any flights originating in North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

Avoid Delta Checked Bag Fees
Below are a few legit ways Delta waives the checked baggage fees when flying in the main cabin.
Get a Delta SkyMiles Credit Card
The best Delta credit cards are some of the best airline credit cards for a reason. The first checked bag is free for you and up to 8 companions. That’s a round-trip $60 savings per person on domestic flights. Your companions must be listed on your travel reservation to get a free checked bag.

Achieve Medallion Status
Delta SkyMiles Medallion members can also get up to 3 free checked bags on select routes.
Main Cabin Flights
The maximum weight for your free bags is 70 pounds instead of the standard 50 pounds.
Which Medallion status you have determines how many free bags you get for flights within the U.S. and Canada:
- Silver Medallion members: 1 free bag
- Gold Medallion members: 2 free bags
- Platinum Medallion members: 3 free bags
- Diamond Medallion members: 3 free bags
On all other international flights, your third checked bag is free. Although it can only weigh 50 pounds or less.
If you fly in Delta First Class or Delta One, your first three checked bags are free to all destinations. Each bag can weigh 70 pounds.
Flying Delta Premium Select also lets you check three bags for free. However, each bag can only weigh 50 pounds at most.
Active military members can enjoy free checked bags when traveling on official business or for personal reasons. The weight and size limits depend on your travel status.
On Military Orders
When traveling on military orders, you get 5 free checked bags in any cabin class. Each bag can weigh up to 100 pounds and size up to 80 inches (length + width + height).
For personal travel, your two first two bags are free when flying in the main cabin. Each bag can weigh up to 50 pounds. If flying in the premium cabin, you get three free bags weighing up to 70 pounds. The maximum size for each bag is 62 inches regardless of which cabin you fly in.
Delta may also waive the checked bag fee for these qualifying items. These items will need to meet the maximum weight for your cabin or loyalty status. For most flyers, that’s a maximum weight of 50 pounds.
For example, sporting items like golf bags, fishing equipment, and boogie boards can be your first checked bag. Even antlers weighing less than 50 pounds can count as a free checked bags. Small musical instruments and guitars can carry-on if you don’t want to check them.
Booster seats, infant seats, and bassinets can be a free second carry-on item. Strollers and child car seats can always be checked for free. Portable wheelchairs (that don’t qualify as a dangerous item) can fly for free.
If you fly in the main cabin and don’t cross the equator or an ocean, you can expect to pay $30 for your first checked bag. Flying in a premium cabin, having a Delta Air Lines credit card, or being a Medallion member are the three best ways of getting your baggage fees waived.
