What’s better than earning the 60,000 points Chase Sapphire Preferred sign-up bonus? Earning 50,000 bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points with the Sapphire Preferred referral bonus of course! If you’ve been spreading the love of the Sapphire Preferred to your friends, you could be leaving points on the table.
Obviously, you must hold the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card before you can receive a referral bonus. Here’s what you need to know about referring others to the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
FYI – here’s the credit score you will need before applying for the Sapphire Preferred.
How Many Points Do You Earn With Each Referral?
You will earn 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points for each referred friend when their application is approved. Chase lets you refer up to five different friends to earn 50,000 total points per year through their refer-a-friend bonus.
Your referred friends will also have the opportunity to earn the 60,000 bonus point welcome offer by spending $4,000 on purchases within the first three months. This is the exact same sign-up bonus they would receive if they applied for the Chase Sapphire Preferred without your referral.
Even if this is your first year owning the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, you can refer your friends to apply as well. How sweet would it be to earn 110,000 bonus Chase points in a single year?
How To Refer Your Friends to the Sapphire Preferred
To get started, visit the Chase Refer-a-Friend page and the following information to verify your Sapphire Preferred membership:
-Last 4 digits on your Sapphire Preferred card
After your ownership is verified, you can invite up to 25 friends at once by entering their email addresses. Chase will send an email to each friend inviting them to apply for the Sapphire Preferred through your link.
Your friend must apply for the Sapphire Preferred through your link so you can receive the 10,000 point referral bonus. If they don’t use your link, you’ll need to find another friend to use your link.
If your friends are concerned about Chase selling their email address for profit, tell them not to worry. Chase will only use their email address to help you earn the Sapphire Preferred referral bonus. They will not receive any other promotional offers and their information will not be sold to a third party.
Receive Your Bonus Points Within Eight Weeks
Chase will credit your bonus points within eight weeks after Chase approves your friend’s application. When your account is credited, the bonus points will show as a “Refer-a-Friend bonus” on your next statement.
There are no restrictions on how you use your bonus points. They can be transferred on a 1:1 basis to a Chase travel partner or redeemed through the Chase Ultimate Rewards Mall for award travel, statement credits, gift cards, merchandise, or exclusive Sapphire member events like a trip to the Emmys.
It doesn’t matter how you plan on redeeming your bonus points, all you need to know is that Chase will give you up to 50,000 bonus points every single year by referring the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card to others.
Can I Earn More Than 50,000 Bonus Points Each Year?
No. Chase will not let you earn more than 50,000 points per year. Even if your current refer-a-friend balance is 45,000 points and a new friend applies through your referral link, you will only earn 5,000 points instead of the full 10,000 points if your annual referral bonus balance was 40,000 points or less.
Chase will not carry over any extra points from partial bonuses and extra referrals into the next calendar year. Your refer-a-friend balance resets to zero and you have the opportunity to refer five different friends to earn a maximum of 50,000 points.
What To Tell Your Friends About The Sapphire Preferred
Word-of-mouth recommendations are often the best source of advertisement. In addition to asking your friend to apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card with your referral link so you both earn 50,000 bonus points, tell them why you love the Sapphire Preferred.
You can share with them 5 best reasons to have the Sapphire Preferred that include:
-Unlimited 1:1 point transfers to 13 travel partners like Southwest Airlines, United, and Avios.
-Points are worth 1.25 cents when you redeem them for any type of award travel (most credit card points have a maximum value of 1 cent each).
-A sign-up bonus of 60,000 points worth at least $750 in award travel
-Earn unlimited 2x bonus points per $1 spent on all travel and dining purchases
If your own personal accolades are not enough, the Sapphire Preferred has also won multiple awards for being the best flexible travel rewards credit card by leading publications like Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. Very few travel credit cards let you directly transfer your points to an airline carrier to book European flights for 4,500 points or for a swanky, first-class flight to the other side of the world.
Every point your friends earn is pure profit that can be used to book an award flight or award night. With the Sapphire Preferred, their points are most valuable when they redeem them for award travel through Chase at 1.25 cents each (10,000 points=$125 in award travel) or by transferring them to a travel partner to easily be worth 1.5 to 2.0 cents each (10,000 points= $150 to $200 in award travel).
Don’t Forget About the Chase 5/24 Rule
Don’t forget that the Sapphire Preferred falls under Chase’s 5/24 rule that automatically declines any credit card application if the applicant receives at least five new credit cards in the most recent 24 months.
Being the good friend you are, you might think to invite this friend to apply for a Sapphire Preferred later in the year or even next year when at least one of their credit inquiries has dropped from their credit report.
Now you know the third way (sign-up bonus and purchase rewards being the other two) to earn Ultimate Rewards points with your Chase Sapphire Preferred. Being a good friend is a lot more valuable as you can both enjoy using the Sapphire Preferred to fund your expeditions. So, pick your five friends that are most likely to apply for the Sapphire Preferred and refer them before they beat you to the punch!
