As you surely know, today is Valentine’s Day! And as you may also know, on February 14 we’re also still in the depths of flu season in America, so as today’s tip I’m sharing some simple advice from the CDC regarding how to protect yourself. (It’s not too late!) From a series of tweets:

  1. For everyone 6 months and older, the first and most important step to fight flu is to get a flu vaccine.
  2. Take everyday preventive actions, like avoiding close contact with people who are sick, covering your nose and mouth when sneezing, and frequent handwashing can help reduce the spread of germs.
  3. If you do get flu symptoms, and are at high risk of complications or are experiencing severe symptoms, talk with your doctor. You may need antiviral drugs to treat your illness.

It’s fairly common-sense advice, but don’t forget that the flu is serious business and protection against should be, too. Importantly, it is not too late to get a flu vaccine. It generally takes about two weeks for sufficient antibodies to build up after you get the vaccine. As the CDC writes, flu season usually “peaks between December and February, although activity can last as late as May,” so you can still protect yourself against the next few weeks/months of risk. For more, see the CDC’s main flu page here.

THANK YOU for promoting healthy behaviors including the flu vaccine! We need more public forums that speak the truth about the protective effect vaccines have and dissuade the siren song of false voices fighting against them.
