TORONTO'S CHINATOWN
Speaking of culture, what better place to get a quick dose than Chinatown? The Chinese make up over 10% of Toronto's population
and there are now six distinct Chinatowns in the city. I spent a late Sunday morning walking along Spadina Avenue, which runs through the heart of Toronto's Chinatown. I really felt like I was in Asia (except for the prices) as the vendors
were surprisingly selling fruits and vegetables that I've only seen in the Far East. It was such a treat to buy my favorite sweet, tropical fruit, rambutans. Later, I had dim sum
at The Bright Pearl Seafood Restaurant. I don't think it compares to L.A.'s Empress Pavilion but both the service
and the food were good. It was cheap and packed with patrons (a good sign for food turnover). At The Bright Pearl, dim sum is served all day
and you'll find between 80 and 100 different dishes. The Bright Pearl Seafood Restaurant, 346 Spadina Avenue; tel.: 416-979-3988.
THE CN TOWER
Okay, it was time to face my fear ... again! If you remember, I recently went up in a hot air balloon, a big accomplishment for me, but I was still nervous to go up to the top of the world's tallest
freestanding structure. After 9/11, tall buildings freak me out. If you're familiar with Toronto, you know that The CN Tower
dominates its skyline. It stands at an impressive height of 1,815 ft., 5 inches (about 554 meters). It was built in 1976 and approximately 2 million people visit each year. There are six high-speed, glass-fronted elevators that travel 15 miles per hour and give you a breathtaking view
of the city as you race to the top in just 58 seconds. I was the last one to get into the elevator
and I didn't realize that my position proffered the best view. I was going to close my eyes but maybe surviving the hot air balloon ride really calmed my nerves. Once I stepped into the elevator my fear turned into excitement. When we reached the top, I even walked
across a 2.5-inch thick glass floor
that is 1,122 feet above the ground. Actually, I did it twice!
360 RESTAURANT
There are two main places to eat at the top of the CN Tower; a casual place called Horizons Café and 360. 360 is the place
you want to dine for a special
occasion or an important business meeting. It's an award-winning, fine
dining restaurant
and is located 1,150 feet above the ground. The best
part is that this revolving restaurant gives guests
a 360 degree view of the city and on a clear day, you can even see Buffalo! The floor is constantly spinning but it moves slowly enough that you barely notice it. It does a complete rotation once every 72 minutes. 360 is open daily and reservations are highly recommended. Call 416-362-5411 or visit the website at CNTower.ca. They offer a few package deals but the normal lift
fee is $21.49 for adults (13-64), $19.49 for seniors (65+), and $14.49 for children (4-12). But here's a tip: If you dine at 360, your lift fee is waived, but you do need to purchase, at minimum, a main course, which starts at $31!
VIDEO
Here's a short Johnny Jet video of my trip to Toronto. It's also on YouTube, so it only takes a few seconds to load (though the quality is not as crisp). We also have all the Johnny Jet videos ever made on their servers.
NEXT WEEK Next week we hop the pond. I'll give you a hint where we're headed. You may be surprised to learn that you can now fly nonstop into one of this country's southern cities, which is popular with the jet set. Au revoir!

SOME OF LAST WEEK'S READER AIR-eMAIL
In today's (July 11, 2007) issue, the promotion for the bonus website, mosio.com, actually ended July 9th, making it moot and invalid. That's either unfair or, hopefully, just a typo. Regards, A. Lowey – London REPLY: Thanks for the email (we received a ton of them). The good folks at Mosio.com
were kind enough to extend the free membership until the 19th but I forgot to put in the new code for you to use! It’s “MYMOSIO”. ANN’S REPLY: Thanks for your prompt reply. I am impressed not only by your quick turnaround but also by your ability to negotiate an extension of the offer which has now turned this complaint into a real compliment. Great customer service on your part and Mosio's. Well done! And many thanks for your excellent follow-up. Regards, Ann - London
RE: Mosio.com. Verrrry Cool JJ-signed up-tested it-love it! Maholo Brah! John M. - Grapevine Texas.
Love your newsletter. I have been reading it for years and have saved a lot of money and time from the tips and by using the links. I was surprised to read about Delta serving such great meals in first class. On April 23, this year, we flew first class round trip from Hartford, CT to Tucson, AZ with plane change in Atlanta and did not receive any food during the whole trip, both going and return. All that was served in 1st class were pretzels, peanuts, etc. I swore I would never fly Delta again. Where did I go wrong? Was this due to this being a domestic flight vs. international? Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next trip. Walter – Hartford, CT. REPLY: Thanks for the kind words! Complimentary snacks are offered on domestic flights under 1,550 miles. Snacks AND meals are offered in First Class on flights over 1,550 miles. And, I think plans are in the works to upgrade the domestic meal service soon. Sorry to hear about your Best Buy plight. I too get very frustrated when things like this happen to me. I have a Best Buy near my home where I have bought two cell phones, a DVD player and a TV – amongst other small items – from them. I will be sure not to buy from them again. Fortunately I have other options nearby, including Target. If your fans join the bandwagon, hopefully someone higher up the food chain at Best Buy will get wind of your situation and make amends. The shame is, as you have found, there are good customer service reps at Best Buy. It’s the jerks who are in position to make the right decision that make the rest of the company look bad. Bob S – Pittsburgh
I’ve been reading your newsletter for a few years now and I love your stories. They’re a real treat! And I just had to write in this week and say that I couldn’t agree more about Best Buy. Worst Buy indeed! I’ve had so many negative experiences with them!!! I’m on board with your boycott! Good for you for writing about it too!!! I also wanted to say that it’s really nice to see a new woman in your stories. (I hope you don’t mind me saying so). I remember the days of another girl but it’s nice to start to see you in what looks like a new relationship. This new woman has appeared in a few stories and she’s exotic and beautiful and you look happy. Just my two cents. I hope you don’t mind. Greg A. - a loyal reader from New York.
Whenever I buy a new electronic gizmo, appliance, whatever that may have a warranty, I cut the bar code & description label off the box & throw away the box. I file the barcode & label in a file & write on the back of it the date of purchase (mo/yr) so I can find the receipt in my bank files. Easier & less cumbersome than saving a box! Unless you're planning on moving soon, of course... Wow, your dad did lose weight, hope he's feeling better. Happy travels! Nicole S – Sydney, Australia
My husband and I agree, Best Buy is the worst!
We quit going there a few years ago, and
now go to Target for cartridges, or Staples
for toners. And we have the Canon camera
and love it, we purchased it at Wal-Mart and
got a great price on it! Lolly H - California
I'm hardly a web site guru or anything like that, but, I hate to say this, your homepage is waaaaay overkill. Just to many text links, really hard to navigate, I got dizzy looking at them all. Also hard to find stories from guest writers and his previous stories. JJ fan all the way! Doc M - Virginia Beach, VA
Love the link to Mizpee.com! Talk about an interesting new biz model! Jess R – Los Angeles, CA
It kills me that you were in Grand Central and I didn't even know it! I work in a building connected to Grand Central. It would be great to say hi sometime when you're in the city. You've helped me in my travels a lot over the years. Keep up the good work. Bill S - New York City
Is that a new gal in JJ's life... the pic with Nancy and Dad and JJ and ?? JJ you are the catch for all of mothers that have single daughters over the age of 30 [25]...you are too wonderful...your care for your dad and mom is awesome... Sailinsal - Rowland Heights, CA
I just want to say that in addition to all the wonderful information you pass on to your readers, I am grateful to be able to share your family with you. I think of your Mom often after reading the heartfelt letter you wrote a few years past and I cherish the friendship you have with your Dad. I am wishing him a speedy recovery and many happy times together with you. Keep traveling...........and writing. I look forward to each edition. Thanks. Sharon S -
I've been on your website for many years - you were pioneers & have always proven reliable. C. J. – New York, NY
I love your travel tips. We're in Seagrove Beach FL, Hwy 30-A and saw you were in Sandestin not long ago. Come to our area soon. Great beach, food, etc.
