How I handle a loud A/C unit in a hotel roomIf you’re a light sleeper like I am, you’ve probably been annoyed once or twice (or more) by a hotel air conditioning unit going on and off throughout the night. It’s taken me a while to figure out what works for me when I encounter a loud one, and in fact it’s still a learning experience because no hotel A/C unit seems to be the same. That said, here’s what I do: If I’m bothered by an A/C unit or thermostat-connected system going on and off and keeping me up, I set the power setting to low/”LO” (instead of the default “Auto” setting) and the temperature to something slightly warmer (like 70ºF) than my desired temp of 69ºF. If the unit looks like the one pictured above, I just tap “Fan” a couple of times to get to the LO setting.

The idea is to keep your comfort up while limiting how often the system needs to be working at full capacity. Of course, not all hotel thermostats are fully within your control, as noted in this WSJ article (for subscribers only, unfortunately).

As far as A/C noise, I do what you suggested plus keep the fan on, instead of auto, where it cycles on and off, frequently noisily.
