Airline credit cards can help you save money and earn points/miles for your travels. Plus, they usually have options for all kinds of travelers. For instance, United credit cards come with options for casual or budget travelers, frequent travelers who check baggage and want to earn miles, business travelers, and travelers who like to travel in luxury.
While these Hawaiian Airlines credit cards don’t come with as many options, they are still quite valuable. Here are four of the best ways to redeem Hawaiian Airlines miles for award flights.
4 Ways the Hawaiian Airlines Credit Card is a Great Deal
You will be happy to hear that Hawaiian Airlines still publishes a fixed award chart. This makes it easy to predict how many miles you need to book award flights.
1. U.S. West Coast to Hawaii from 20,000 Miles
You can save a few points by flying to Hawaii from the United States West Coast instead of using a legacy carrier. Award flights start at 20,000 miles one-way plus $6 for an economy class seat. First-class seats start at 40,000 miles plus 6 seats.
It’s still possible to find slightly cheaper award flights on Southwest to Hawaii, depending on award availability, in the 15,000 to the 20,000-point range. However, peak travel days require more than 20,000 miles each way on peak travel days.
Award flights cost more from the eastern United States, but you can still find good deals as award flights start at 30,000 miles. You may decide to fly from Boston to Honolulu for bragging rights as it’s currently the longest domestic flight in the United States. Even this route only costs 30,000 miles plus $6 for non-stop service. Splurging on a first-class flight gives you lie-flat seats for 130,000 plus $6 each way.
2. Intra-Hawaii Flights from 7,500 Miles
Your next Hawaiian vacation may involve visiting several islands. Hawaiian Airlines operates flights between the various islands. You can book neighbor island award flights for 7,500 miles in economy. First-class flights start at 15,000 miles each way.
The cash value for these flights is usually between $97 and $132 each way. You might decide to pay cash because of the relatively low cost. But you can still make each mile worth between 1.29 and 1.76 cents each which is still a respectable redemption rate.
3. Japan, Korea, Australia, or New Zealand to Hawaii from 40,000 Miles
Hawaiian Airlines doesn’t charge a fuel surcharge on international flights. Economy flights start at 40,000 miles plus fees and taxes. Business-class flights start at 65,000 miles plus fees and taxes.
Award flights between Sydney and Honolulu can be found for 40,000 miles plus $80.73 each way. Business-class seats cost 130,000 miles plus $80.73.
One-way flights to Japan start at 50,000 points plus $51. Most premium cabin flights cost 130,000 miles each way. However, you can periodically find bargains like flying from Narita, Japan to Honolulu for 65,000 miles and $51. This overnight flight can be the perfect option to arrive rested with the lie-flat seats.
If you want a more remote destination, award flights from Hawaii to either Pago Pago (Samoa) or Papeete (Tahiti) start at 27,500 miles economy or 47,500 miles business class each way.
4. Partner Flights
When flying abroad, you may try booking award flight on partner airlines like Virgin Australia or Japan Airlines to save miles. Bear in mind some partners only allow you to book a roundtrip fare. Stopovers might be allowed, but you will need to read the partner terms and conditions.
It’s also possible to avoid the fuel surcharges some of these airlines charge if you book directly through their loyalty program.
Current airline partners include:
- Japan Airlines
- Korean Air
- Virgin Atlantic
- Virgin Australia
Partner flights are a good option for short-haul flights within a certain country. For instance, roundtrip intra-Japan flights cost 24,000 miles (12,000 miles each way).
Booking a Virgin Australia business flight between 2,001 and 4,000 miles only costs 120,000 miles each way. As Hawaii is over 5,000 miles away, a roundtrip flight costs 200,000 miles roundtrip for business class. This can still be cheaper than flying Hawaiian Airlines, depending on award availability.
Another nifty partner route is on Virgin Atlantic from the U.K. to the U.S. East Coast. It’s possible to fly to Europe with HawaiianMiles with this partner option. You pay 125,000 miles roundtrip for an Upper-Class seat or 60,000 miles economy. Plus you avoid the fuel surcharge that Virgin Atlantic charges on long-haul flights.
Other Hawaiian Airlines Credit Card Benefits
Besides the flexible redemption options above, being a Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® or Hawaiian Airlines® Business Mastercard® cardholder lets you enjoy a few extra perks.
Discounted Award Flights
It’s possible to scoop up lower-priced fares on select main cabin fares.
One example is flying from 17,500 miles (instead of 20,000 miles) each way from the U.S. West Coast to Hawaii. East Coast flights only cost 26,250 miles instead of 30,000 miles. These discounts make flying Hawaiian Airlines more attractive versus a legacy carrier.
Share Miles Fee-Free
You can also share miles fee-free with friends and family. Your 60,000 bonus miles are a good start, but sharing miles and any American Express Membership Rewards 1:1 point transfers help you pay for an entire roundtrip with miles.
Earn 3x Miles on Purchases
In addition to the standard earn rate of 1 HawaiianMile per 1 mile flown, you get 3x miles per $1 spent on Hawaiian Airline purchases. Gas, dining, and grocery store purchases earn 2 miles per $1 spent. All non-bonus spending earns unlimited 1 mile per $1.
As you most likely will pay cash for a few flights, Hawaiian Airlines gives you a discount once a year on a companion ticket. New cardmembers get a one-time 50% companion discount when flying between Hawaii and the Mainland. Then you get a $100 companion discount on roundtrip travel between Hawaii and the Mainland each card anniversary.
First Free Checked Bag for Personal Hawaiian Airlines Credit Card Cardholders
You can also get one free checked bag for eligible bags on domestic flights for the primary cardholder when using your Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® to purchase the flight. This can either be between Hawaii and the Mainland or intra-island flights. This perk saves you $25 when flying from North America and $15 on intra-island flights.
Business Card Specific Perks Including Earning an Additional 40,000 Miles
The Hawaiian Airlines® Business Mastercard® has its own unique perks including the ability to earn up to 40,000 annual bonus miles. Cardholders will earn 20,000 bonus miles with $50,000-$99,999 in annual purchases. Or, they can earn 40,000 bonus miles with $100,000 or more in annual purchases.
Additionally, the business card comes with complimentary employee cards and easier expense tracking capabilities.
