Each Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Christian T. form Nashville, who offers some advice for traveling with a drone:
“Got a drone and want to travel with it? Unless you have the DJI Mavic Pro or another compact drone, this may be a bit of a challenge.. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Get a case or bag — The first step to traveling with your drone is to get a case or bag.. You’ll want a case that will fit within the size limits of a carry-on bag. There are plenty of bags for the Phantom 3/4 drones that are within carry-on size specifications.
- Watch your batteries — Due to FAA regulations, drone batteries must be carried on the plane and never checked. It is recommended that you check your drone as well (who would want to trust it getting thrown around under the plane), but if that’s not possible, you need to carry your batteries with you. Make sure they fit within the regulations of being under 100Wh.. DJI batteries are under this limit, and you can check the side of your drone battery if you’re not sure.
- Smaller is better — Smaller is more expensive, but it’s also better. If you can afford the DJI Mavic Pro and you travel frequently, go for it! It’s much easier to carry than a Phantom 3 or Phantom 4.
- Check before you fly — When traveling to an unfamiliar area, it is crucial to check your surroundings before you fly. AirMap is a great tool to make sure you’re not within any airports or other things that would prevent you from legally flying. Make sure your drone is registered with the FAA, use common sense, and ask for permission before taking off and landing on private property.
