GOOD TO KNOW

-LA Times: Your Cruise is Canceled because of Hurricane Irma. Now What Do you Do?
-The FAA does not close its control tower at MIA (Miami Airport) until sustained winds (not gusts) reach 55 miles per hour, at which point planes cannot take off or land. However, many airlines decide to not fly well before that point and sometimes on a case-by-case basis, so passengers should stay in close contact with their individual airline about their flight status and make arrangements before coming to the airport.
-Passenger and cargo flights at Miami International Airport continue to increase toward a full daily schedule. There were 158 arrivals and 100 departures on September 12, but a total of 526 flights were cancelled. There were also 147 cargo-only flights yesterday.
-The projected schedule for today includes 225 arrival flights and 208 departures, with a total of 402 flights cancelled – which is about 50 percent of MIA’s normal schedule.
-Full flight operations by all airlines are expected sometime this weekend.
-Since all airlines are not yet at a full schedule, passengers should contact their airline to confirm their flight’s status before coming to the airport.
-The MIA Rental Car Center is now open, and Metrorail and Metrobus service at MIA is operating at a limited schedule. Taxi and Transportation Network Company service have also resumed.

GOOD TO KNOW FOR NEXT STORM
-Buy travel insurance as soon as you purchase your trip because once a storm is formed you can’t buy it. I use Allianz Travel Insurance (Full disclosure: I work as an ambassador for Allianz Global Assistance (AGA Service Company) and receive financial compensation).
-The MIA airport is not a designated shelter during a storm, and operational needs at MIA may require occupants to be evacuated to nearby shelters. Resources like food and water may also not be readily available in the airport during or after the storm. For the latest updates about airport operations, airport users should follow MIA on Twitter @iflymia.
