A reader just sent me this email: “My BofA debit card has a six-digit PIN. Can I use it to withdraw cash from a BNL ATM in Italy?”
That’s an excellent question. I’m not sure about a BNL ATM, but I highly recommended that you make sure your PIN is only four digits and not longer. Here’s the advice straight from the horse’s mouth (Bank of America): “Some international ATMs support only 4-digit PINs. Be sure your PIN does not start with a zero, and know your PIN by the numbers, as some ATMs outside the United States do not have letters on the keypads. To change your PIN prior to traveling, select ‘More Options,’ select ‘Change PIN’ and follow the screen prompts at a Bank of America ATM.”
If you don’t bank with Bank of America, make sure to check with your bank. Here’s one of their competitor’s (Wells Fargo) advice:
“Most foreign ATMs require a four-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). If your PIN doesn’t meet this requirement, you can change it before you leave on your trip—just call 1-800-TO-WELLS (1-800-869-3557) or visit any Wells Fargo ATM or location.”

I just used my B of A card at a BNL ATM in Poggibonsi, Italy– searched an hour for it based on feedback from JJ and other trades that you could use a BNL ATM and not get non BofA ATM surcharges. B of A charged me 8.75.
I have never seen an ATM that does not accept a 6 digit PIN. I live in Europe and have pulled out money in 10+ different countries here and have never had a problem.
