The Most Dangerous Places to Stand During a Lightning Storm

Your chances of being killed by lightning are about 10.5 million to one. Chances are slim, but you should still be prepared, which is why I’m featuring this Business Insider tweet and video (above) about the most dangerous places to stand during a lightning storm. Most people know not to stand under a tall tree, but in fact, as the video says, “More people were struck and died by lightning out in the open than anywhere else in the US between 2006-2016.” Over that period, here are the five most common settings for lightning deaths:

  1. In the open
  2. Under a tree
  3. Unknown (!)
  4. Boat
  5. In water

The safest places to take shelter are in a car or an enclosed building. Also, be sure to check out the National Weather Service (NWS)’s excellent page on lightning safety.
