Some airline rewards programs will charge a “close-in” booking fee when you book an award flight within the last two or three weeks before departure. Not so when you use the United MileagePlus® Club Card. You will still want to book as early as possible to ensure you can get one of the low-cost Saver Awards, but, this is one less way you can get nickel-and-dimed by the airlines if you cannot book a flight until the last-minute.

Is the United MileagePlus Club Card Worth It?
Here’s a breakdown of the two most important fees you will encounter with a travel rewards card:
- Annual Fee: $450
- Foreign Transaction Fee: 0%
Not including the new 50,000 bonus miles and the United miles you will earn and redeem from your United and non-United purchases, the benefits alone can be worth owning this card if you fly United at least twice a year. The four free checked bags (two for you and two for your travel companion) begins saving you money on your third round-trip. Throw in a United Club visit or two and the expedited Premier Access benefits and the United Club credit card pays for itself every year.
If you’re just a casual United passenger, the no-fee United TravelBank or $95-a-year United MileagePlus Explorer Card can be a better choice as you can still earn points for United award travel on every purchase without the large annual fee. Or there’s the more flexible Chase Sapphire Preferred which earns Ultimate Rewards points that can be transferred into United MileagePlus.
It’s also worth mentioning that United changing its award chart in November.
