New York City 2010 Events
It’s a new year, which means a new roster of fun and interesting events in this great place we call New York City. I’ve compiled a list of some of the more popular events coming up this year. Put them on your calendar: You won’t want to miss out!

JANUARY

Restaurant Week (1/25 – 2/7/09)
A New York favorite! Go ahead, dine at some of New York’s best restaurants every night this week at a fraction of the cost (just watch out for the bar tab!). More Info.

Ice Skating at Bryant Park (11/6/09 – 1/24/10)
The last day to ice skate at Bryant Park this season is January 24 (then they prepare to put the tents up for Fashion Week). Open Sunday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until midnight. More Info.

$20 Tickets at Lincoln Center (now – 1/26/10)
Take advantage of $20 for 20 Days, during which $20 tickets to select Lincoln Center performances will be available for day-of purchase, starting at noon daily (first come, first served; limit two tickets per person). This special offer is available for a limited time and tickets are available only in person at the box office for performances that day, so head to the David Rubenstein Atrium and experience Lincoln Center for less! Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival – (1/30/10)
Enjoy all the pleasures that true Southerners live by-beer, bourbon, barbeque, bacon, and bluegrass! It’s a great day of beer sippin’, bourbon tastin’, music listenin’, cigar smokin’, and barbeque eatin’. Admission buys you a sampling glass so you can enjoy all the beer and bourbon you care to taste. Oh yeah-there’s a mechanical bull to ride as well. Yee-haw! More Info.

FEBRUARY

Fashion Week (2/11/10 – 2/18/10)
The tents are back! All of the hottest designers are showing their collections to celebs and fashionistas in the tents in Bryant Park on 6th Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets. You might not get a ticket to a show, but you could crash a party-there will be lots going on during the week! More Info.

134th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (2/15/10 – 2/16/10)
Best in Show is one funny movie-“and to think that in some countries these dogs are eaten” (Buck Laughlin)-but this tradition is serious business. For two days in February, dogs rule the Garden and NYC. More Info.

MARCH

St. Patrick’s Day Parade (3/17/10)
The parade starts at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue at 11:00 a.m., with bagpipers, high school bands, and the ever-present politicians making their way up Fifth Avenue to 86th Street, where the parade will probably finish around 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. More Info.

Basketball: 73rd Annual National Invitation Tournament (3/30/10 – 4/1/10)
Get ready for the NIT at the Garden as the 2009-2010 college hoops schedule is reduced from a nationwide 40-team field to only four. Tradition continues, as the semi-final and championship games will be played on the Garden’s hardwood on March 30th and April 1st. More Info.

APRIL

New York Yankees Home Opener (4/13/10)
The boys are back! It will more than likely not be warm outside (heck, the ground will probably still be frozen), but there’s nothing like cheering for the 2009 World Series Champions in Yankee Stadium! Let’s go Yankees! More Info.

Macy’s Flower Show (Dates TBD)
Featuring stunning landscapes, celebrity guests, and renowned floral designers, Macy’s will transform their State Street store into a vibrant, colorful dreamscape showcasing unique garden environments overflowing with thousands of exotic trees and flowering plants. More Info.

2010 Kips Bay Decorator Show House (April – May, exact dates TBD)
Ever dream of seeing the inside of a NYC home that has been decorated by some of the top interior designers in the city? Now’s your chance-and the proceeds go to a good cause, the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. More Info.

Tribeca Film Festival (4/21/10 – 5/2/10)
De Niro loves Tribeca and NY loves the Tribeca Film Festival. The Tribeca Film Festival has become one of the most prominent film festivals in the world, offering moviegoers a wide variety of independent films including documentaries, narrative features, and shorts. You never know who you will see during the festival. More Info.

MAY

Cherry Blossom Festival – Sakura Matsuri (5/1/10 & 5/2/10)
Spend a day at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and participate in New York City’s “rite of spring” at Sakura Matsuri, a phenomenal weekend celebrating Japanese culture with over 60 events and performances. Enjoy contemporary and traditional Japanese music and dance, taiko drumming, ikebana flower arranging, Japanese DJs, presentations on the art of manga, tea ceremonies, and workshops for all ages. JUNE, JULY & AUGUST

Mermaid Day Parade (6/19/10)
Dress up or don’t dress up, just make sure you bring your camera! The Mermaid Parade is held to celebrate the beginning of the summer season-and who doesn’t love celebrating summer? More Info.

There are so many great FREE summer events in NYC it would be a crime to miss any of them. Dates haven’t been confirmed but here is a list of some of the more popular events we have to look forward to: Central Park Summerstage: Frequent summer concerts at the Central Park Summerstage, located at Rumsey Playfield. Some concerts are benefits, but many are free!

Metropolitan Opera and New York Philharmonic in the Parks: The Metropolitan Opera and The New York Philharmonic will perform in all five New York City boroughs.
Naumburg Orchestral Concerts: The oldest free outdoor concert series in the US, the Naumburg features symphonic and semi-classical music in Central Park’s Naumburg Bandshell.
Broadway in Bryant Park: See performances from popular Broadway shows live in Bryant Park.
Washington Square Music Festival: Enjoy this free outdoor concert series.
Music on the Oval: Free concerts on the Stuyvesant Oval.
Celebrate Brooklyn!: Celebrate Brooklyn with a wide variety of musical performances at the Prospect Park Bandshell.
Roosevelt Live: Check out free concerts on Roosevelt Island on the RiverWalk Commons.
Madison Sq Music: Free concerts June – August.
River Rocks: Check out free concerts on Pier 54 in Hudson River Park (at 14th Street)
Rythmn & Blues Festival at Metrotech: See great R&B performances in Brooklyn.
Lincoln Center Festival: Ballet, music, dance, and more are featured throughout the festival.
Lincoln Center Out Of Doors: Over 100 different events including world music, internationally acclaimed dance, cutting-edge performances, special events, cool jazz, and fun for kids.
Summer in the Square: Union Square is host to lunchtime concerts, afternoon yoga classes, and evening performances.
SummerGarden: Concerts presented in the MoMA Sculpture Garden
Siren Music Festival: We hope this annual Coney Island event will continue.
Clinton Concert Series: See free evening concerts in Clinton Cove Park at 55th Street and Pier 84 at 44th Street.
Harlem Meer Performance Festival: Jazz, blues, gospel, and latin music at the Harlem Meer in Central Park.
CityParks Concerts: In July and August, free concerts will be held at many of New York City’s neighborhood parks throughout the five boroughs. More Info.

SEPTEMBER

Feast of San Gennaro (Dates TBD)
The longest-running, biggest, and most-revered religious outdoor festival in the United States will be held on the streets of historic Little Italy. Be prepared for lots of food and games and great people-watching! More Info.

OCTOBER

CMJ 2010 Music Marathon & Film Festival (10/19/10 – 10/23/10)
The five days and nights of this festival feature over 1,200 artists and 120,000 fans in more than 75 of the city’s greatest nightclubs and theaters. More Info.

NOVEMBER

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (11/25/10)
Marching bands, floats, and huge balloons-oh my! The parade kicks off at 9:00 a.m. Eastern time, but if you want a good view of one of the most famous parades you’d better get there early! TIP: Go to the staging area the night before the parade to see them blow up the balloons. More Info.

ALL YEAR

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA): Free Friday Nights (now – 12/21/10)
Another reason to love Target: Admission to MoMA is free for all visitors during Target Free Friday Nights, held every Friday evening from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tickets for Target Free Friday Nights are not available in advance. Your Target Free Friday Night ticket includes admission to all museum galleries, exhibitions, and films. Thanks, Target! Be sure to check out Tim Burton’s exhibit (now – April 26). A limited number of timed-entry tickets to Tim Burton are available on a first-come, first-served basis. More Info.
