Although it’s inevitable, it’s usually not for the better that major hotel chains adjust the categories of their hotels each year. This year is no different. Radisson Rewards is the latest program to come out with a list of hotels that are changing category.

Luckily, Radisson is giving us some warning. Category changes go into effect on March 1, 2019, so you have nearly a full month to think about your travel plans for the rest of the year and see if there’s anything you want to book ahead of time. Similarly, if a hotel you are considering booking is going down in category on March 1, you should wait to book.

Overall, a total of 84 hotels are going up in category and 57 hotels are going down in category. Most of the changes are by only one category. There is just one hotel changing by more than one category — the Radisson Hotel Barra Rio de Janeiro is going from a Category 5 to Category 3.

Here are some of the notable changes:

  • Radisson RED Minneapolis – Category 6 to Category 5
  • Radisson Blu Minneapolis Downtown – Category 7 to Category 6
  • Radisson Blu Sao Paulo – Category 6 to Category 5
  • Radisson Blu Dubai Waterfront – Category 7 to Category 6
  • Radisson Blu Hotel Altstadt, Salzburg – Category 6 to Category 7
  • Radisson RED Brussels – Category 6 to Category 5
  • Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Gran Canaria Mogan – Category 6 to Category 7
  • Radisson Blu Hotel, Belfast – Category 4 to Category 5
  • Radisson Blu Beke Hotel, Budapest – Category 2 to Category 3
  • Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Dublin – Category 6 to Category 7
  • Radisson Blu Hotel, Lisbon – Category 3 to Category 4

Overall, these changes aren’t really that bad, in my opinion. A decent number of hotels are going up in category, but quite a few are going down as well. Even when skimming the list for what I consider to be notable hotels, almost as many are going down in category as are going up. Whether this is a good or bad change for you really depends on where you plan to travel in 2019 and early 2020!
