Each Friday, we’re featuring a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Marilyn M., who shares:

“Here’s a tip for Canadians travelling by car in the USA.

For years we’ve been frustrated when having to refuel at US gas stations. Since the US has not yet adopted PIN technology on their credit cards, we have been stymied when asked to enter our ZIP code onto a key pad with only numbers on it. As you know Canadian postal codes are made up of three numbers and three letters.

This year, we were told that Canadians can enter the three numerals from their postal code followed by three zeros to authorize the gas purchase. We have tried this in several states and have been successful at all gas stations.”

A nice and insightful tip sure to help a few Canadians down the line. And speaking of PIN technology, be sure to check out my post on two of my favorite cards—one of which has it—and how it’s a good time to go to Europe. Thanks, Marilyn!

Unless the gas pumps in the US have recently been reprogrammed, they will not accept more than 5 digits. Putting in your zip code is a safety feature, as it matches the zip code of your billing address. No correct zip code, no gas!

    I have used 5 digits e. g. 22500 and it works.
