Pack Your Handicap Placards
Each Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Karol, who says:
“If you (or your visiting friends or relatives) have a handicap placard, don’t forget to pack it (or remind them to pack it for their trip). My parents live out of state and came this month to visit. Since they recently obtained a handicap placard, I had them bring it so we could use it while they were visiting. It was so helpful to use during the visit!
I think most states (and maybe even some countries) allow out of state/area placards, but you should check with your local DMV, state and or AAA. Here are a few links I found with information on the topic:

I have had friends bring their Handicap placards with them to Italy and they worked fine. I checked with the local police before using them and we had no problem.
I drove through Switzerland, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands this summer and used a handicap placard everywhere. I used information from http://www.disabledmotorists.eu/en/about_reciprocity/ to gather information, print out and use their information sheets.
Great tip!!! I always travel with my handicap placard and my portable GPS when I travel and know that we will be renting a car.
When renting a car, it’s nice to have the GPS with you as you travel because you’re not sure where gas stations, restaurants and grocery stores are in the area you are visiting. And, the best part is that you don’t need to upgrade to a vehicle with a GPS built in…which is additional dollars added to the already costly car rental fee.
It really comes in handy:-)
