reader-travel-tip2Know Your Insurance Coverage
Each Friday, we’re featuring a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Karol H., who shares:

“Last weekend my aunt from FL (age 83) came to visit us in CA. She fell and broke both feet, requiring immediate surgery on one foot. She was hospitalized for days and put in reab 3,000 miles away from her home.

Luckily, she had her insurance card with her when she fell, but dealing with her insurance company was a nightmare. Florida HMO with no out of network coverage…unless you have an “emergency” out of the network area. That part of the coverage was nicely buried in the contract. After numerous denials and days spent on the phone with her insurance company we were able to get the situation resolved and get the coverage.

P.S. Both the paramedics and the hospital asked for list of medications with dosage (which she did not have). The “take a photo of your prescriptions” tip previously mentioned would have come in handy! If nothing else, print a list and keep it with you as it could be important if you have a medical emergency…we learned the hard way. Safe travels.”

Knowing your coverage—and making sure you’re covered, if you think you need it—is one of the most important things to remember before a trip. I recently wrote about travel insurance, and what you need to know, in a post you can check out here. Thanks Karol, and hope your aunt is feeling better!
