Upgrade from the Chase Sapphire Preferred to the Chase Sapphire Reserve

U/nitropom owned the Chase Sapphire Preferred and wanted to upgrade to the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

This thread has several comments where other people shared their advice about how to request an upgrade and what to expect. It turns out you can call or direct message Chase to start the upgrade process. Being a current Sapphire cardholder disqualifies you from earning the Chase Sapphire Reserve® signup bonus.

But you can enjoy the Sapphire Reserve benefits after the upgrade request finalizes.

If you are in a similar situation, you will need to wait four years after earning your original Sapphire bonus and close your current Sapphire Preferred account. Then you can reapply for a new Sapphire Reserve card.

Redeeming Wells Fargo Go Far Rewards

Reddit member u/CFD191 has a question about redeeming the Wells Fargo Go Far Rewards as they might close their Wells Fargo Propel American Express® card. However, they have a current rewards balance of $15 and need $25 to request a cash statement credit.

Responses so far include keeping the account open because it is one of the best no annual fee travel credit cards you can own. As the card offers free cell phone protection, only using it to pay this expense is an easy way to show account activity. Keeping the account open and current can also build credit as the average account age increases.

Transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards to Airlines

Chase credits cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve let you transfer points to airline partners on a 1:1 ratio thanks to Chase Ultimate Rewards. Booking award flights directly through the airline can let you get more mileage from each point than booking award travel directly through Chase.

One Reddit user was wondering if they needed to own a co-brand airline credit card as well to transfer points. In case you don’t know the answer, you don’t need a branded credit card. All you need is a frequent flyer account with one of the below airlines:

  • Aer Lingus Aer Club
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Flying Blue Air France KLM
  • Iberia Plus
  • JetBlue TrueBlue
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards
  • United MileagePlus
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points in 1,000-point increments to these airline partners. All transfers have a 1:1 ratio which means you don’t “lose” any points unlike transferring from an airline or hotel brand to another.  Most transfers happen instantly so you can transfer shortly before you are ready to book an award flight.

However, if you are interested in airline cards, check out our picks for the best airlines credit cards 2019.

There are plenty of transfer options to book domestic or international flights. Southwest Airlines might be one of your best options for booking domestic travel. You can also transfer to British Airways to book partner flights on American Airlines for 7,500 miles one-way domestic flights 500 miles or less.

Alternatives to the American Express Green Card

The Reddit credit cards subreddit can also be a good source for picking the best credit card from a certain bank. In this case, the best American Express Membership Rewards that come with some of the best rewards credit cards 2019.

R/indienickoftime is asking about whether the American Express Green Card is worth applying for.

While the Platinum Card from American Express and Gold Card from American Express have both received benefit upgrades, the Green Card is essentially unchanged over the years.

While the Green Card was an attractive entry-level option to earn Membership Rewards in the past, there are more robust cards. One choice is the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card. It earns 2 points per $1 at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year) and 1 point per $1 on all other spending. Using your card for 20 purchases in a billing statement gives you a 20% bonus.

Membership Rewards are another one of the most valuable credit card points you can earn. They are usually most valuable when transferring to an airline or hotel transfer partner. Most partners offer 1:1 transfers including Delta SkyMiles, British Airways Executive Club, Hawaiian Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. Hotel partners include Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy.

Is the Chase Sapphire Preferred Signup Bonus Worth It?

Some threads cover credit card signup bonuses and if they are worth earning. One of the most valuable credit card signup bonuses belongs to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

You can earn 60,000 bonus Ultimate Rewards points that are worth $750 when booking award travel through Chase. You can also transfer these points to the Chase airline and hotel transfer partners for more potential value.

Although this is a valuable bonus, you must pay a $95 annual fee (Chase used to waive the annual fee for the first year) and spend $4,000 in the first 3 months to earn the 60,000 point bonus.

The user asking (r/ZemGuse) already owns the Chase Freedom Unlimited. The Freedom Unlimited earns 1.5 Ultimate Rewards points for every $1 spent. However, the Freedom family doesn’t have 1:1 point transfers. Plus, the points are only worth 1 cent each for award travel instead of 1.25 cents each.

The general response is that the signup bonus can be worth it because of the travel redemption options and 1:1 point transfers. He can earn 2 points per $1 on travel and dining with the Sapphire Preferred and 1.5 points on everything else through the Freedom Unlimited. It’s possible to redeem all points through the Sapphire Preferred, even if they are earned on the Chase Freedom Unlimited.
