The Preferred vs Venture Bonus: Which Is Better?

To begin this Preferred vs Venture bonus review, let’s begin with the requirements for each.

New Chase Sapphire Preferred Card cardholders can earn 100,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months. This bonus is worth $1,250 when redeemed through Chase Ultimate Rewards.

New Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card cardholders can earn 60,000 bonus points by spending $3,000 in the first 3 months.

Chase Sapphire Preferred 100,000 Points Signup Bonus

The 100,000 Ultimate Rewards signup bonus for the Chase Sapphire Preferred is the card’s highest-ever welcome offer.

$4,000 Minimum Spend

You will only need to spend $4,000 in the first 3 months to earn the entire bonus.

This is the same spending requirement as the Sapphire Preferred’s standard bonus offer of 60,000 points with a $750 redemption value.

$1,250 Signup Bonus Value

This bonus is worth up to $1,250 in award travel and Chase Pay Yourself Back statement credits. Each point is worth 1.25 cents each instead of the standard 1.00 cents thanks to the 25% redemption bonus.

You can potentially find more value by transferring your points at a 1:1 ratio to the airline and hotel transfer partners.

The 100,000 bonus Ultimate Rewards points can also be worth $1,000 in cash rewards and gift cards.

Who Qualifies for the Sapphire Preferred Bonus?

The Chase Sapphire signup bonus qualifications can be stricter than most cards if you’re a previous Sapphire member.

A basic rundown of the minimum qualifications include:

If you’re a first-time applicant for any Sapphire product, you will most likely qualify for the bonus as long as Chase approves your card application. Your approval odds should be high if you have a minimum 700 credit score and opened less than 5 credit cards in the last 24 months.

While it’s somewhat difficult for previous Sapphire cardholders to earn a repeat signup bonus, it’s possible. You most like won’t be able to earn a second Capital One Venture welcome bonus.

When the Sapphire Preferred Signup Bonus is Better

The Sapphire Preferred signup bonus can be the better option for these reasons:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards are worth 25% more than Venture Miles when redeemed through Chase Ultimate Rewards
  • Can combine the points with other cards that earn Ultimate Rewards
  • Prefer the Sapphire Preferred travel benefits
  • Have already earned a Capital One Venture signup bonus

In addition to the initial signup bonus, you should also compare the ongoing card benefits for each card. This Chase Sapphire Preferred vs Capital One Venture comparison takes an in-depth look at both cards, if you can only choose one right now.

Some of the best Sapphire Preferred benefits include:

  • Points are worth 25% more for award travel redemptions
  • 1:1 point transfers to airlines and hotels (including Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and World of Hyatt)
  • Trip cancellation and delay coverage benefits
  • Primary car rental collision damage waiver
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • $95 annual fee

There are several Chase Sapphire reward categories. The Chase Sapphire Preferred earns unlimited:

  • 5x points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards® (excluding hotel purchases that qualify for the $50 Anniversary Hotel Credit)
  • 5x points on Lyft rides (through March 2022)
  • 3x points on dining (including eligible delivery services, takeout, and dining out)
  • 3x points on online grocery purchases (excluding Target®, Walmart®, and wholesale clubs)
  • Also 3x points on select streaming services
  • 2x points on all other travel purchases
  • 1x point per $1 spent on all non-bonus purchases

There is a $50 annual Ultimate Rewards Hotel Credit. It comes in the form of a statement credit that will automatically be applied to your account when your card is used for hotel accommodation purchases made through the Ultimate Rewards program, up to an annual maximum accumulation of $50.

Plus, on each account anniversary, you’ll earn bonus points equal to 10% of your total purchases made the previous year. So, if you spend $25,000 on purchases, you’ll get 2,500 bonus points.

Capital One Venture 60,000 Points Signup Bonus

In continuing with the Preferred vs Venture bonus, let’s look closer at the Venture Rewards Card. The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has a 60,000-mile bonus after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months.

$600 Signup Bonus Value

The redemption value for 60,000 Venture Miles is $600 in travel statement credits and upcoming travel. Sapphire Preferred points are worth more because of the 25% redemption bonus.

You can also transfer your miles to participating airline and hotel partners. A few  Capital One travel partners now offer 1:1 point transfers.

Each Capital One Venture mile is worth one cent for travel redemptions and 0.8 cents for cash and gift cards.

Between the lower redemption value and the higher spending requirement of the Capital One Venture, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is the better option if you qualify for both bonuses.

Who Qualifies for the Capital One Venture Signup Bonus?

Capital One doesn’t clearly say if previous Venture cardmembers can earn another bonus. The terms and conditions only state, “Existing or previous Accountholders may not be eligible for these bonuses.”

If you have earned a Venture signup bonus in the past, contacting Capital One before applying can be worth your time if they will review your personal situation.

If you’re a first-time applicant, the minimum qualifications include:

  • Have not applied for a Capital One credit card at least 2 times in the last 30 days
  • Do not have a past due Capital One credit card, one exceeding the credit line, or has been charged off within the past year
  • Currently have a non-discharged bankruptcy
  • Your monthly income exceeds your monthly rent/mortgage payment by at least $425

You can qualify for this bonus even if you currently have the $0 annual fee Capital One VentureOne. Your approvals can be best if your credit score is at least 700.

When the Capital One Venture Signup Bonus is Better

These are the instances when the Capital One Venture spending bonus is better:

  • Do not qualify for the Sapphire Preferred signup bonus
  • Prefer the Capital One Venture point redemption options

You might also consider the Capital One Venture if you’re affected by the Chase 5/24 rule by opening 5 or more new credit cards in the last 24 months.

Key Capital One Venture benefits include:

Summary

Both the Preferred and Venture offers are worth it as both cards are some of the top travel credit cards available. Either signup bonus lets you enjoy at least $600 in travel rewards. Most people should consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred signup offer first as it is worth more. However, if earning 2x miles on every purchase plus getting access to TSA PreCheck or Global Entry better serves you, consider the Venture Rewards Card.
