If you know you’re going to be hungry on your flight and you’re in coach, you better bring food on the plane! Lately, I’ve been seeing (at least on American Airlines) either the flight attendants run out of food after serving just the first few rows, or catering not board the food cart period. So it’s better to be safe than sorry. That’s why I always carry granola bars and power bars in my carry-on.
