Face masks are going to be an essential item for travel and everyday life for the foreseeable future. The Sonovia Mask might be the best face mask for you as it can be sanitary, more effective than N95 masks, and reusable. Here is a closer look at the SonoMask lineup.

What is the Sonovia Mask?

The Sonovia Mask is available in two different models:

  • SonoMask: 84% filtration level (3 microns) and a basic nose wire
  • SonoMask Pro: 97% filtration level (3 microns), reinforced nose wire, and chin guard

You will get the most protection from the Sonomask Pro. However, either model is washable and has the proprietary zinc technology to repel viruses, bacteria, and fungi.

The manufacturer claims its masks to be up to 99.9% effective against bacteria and viruses, including coronavirus. An independent lab study confirms a 99.34% efficacy rate for neutralizing the SARS-COV2 within 30 minutes of exposure.

The mask can also be 99.95% effective against the Delta variant.

In addition to one of the world’s highest efficacy rates for blocking viruses, the Sonovia Mask has several other special features.

Zinc-Coating to Prevent Bacteria Growth

Wearing a mask for extended periods can be rough on your skin and cause “maskne” and other issues that may require a trip to the dermatologist.

Each SonoMask has a zinc-coating that repels bacteria and fungi growth that can harm your skin. The company states they use patented ultrasound technology to optimize the efficiency of these masks.

This coating helps the mask provide active protection instead of passive protection against harmful contaminants you might breathe in. As a result, the air you breathe can be cleaner than when you wear an N95, cloth, or disposable surgical mask.

Eco-Friendly Materials

These masks do not have chemical binders that can be harmful to the environment and your health. Sonovia claims the mask uses 50% fewer chemicals in the manufacturing process.

Other mask manufacturers may use artificial compounds to reduce production costs and extend the lifespan of the mask. However, you don’t know what impact these materials may have on your long-term personal health.

The mask construction is 80% polyester and 20% cotton, according to the Sonovia Tech online store.

Reusable Masks

Sonovia says you can wash your mask at least 55 times.

The prevalent use of face masks for the past 18+ months means more waste and litter. For example, you might go through several masks per day or week if you use them frequently or are often working with the public.

Many of us also see discarded masks in parking lots and other public spaces, and they are an eyesore and unsanitary.

Using a reusable mask can minimize your waste footprint and reduce your out-of-pocket replacement costs.

The patented zinc-coating protects your health so you can safely reuse your mask with proper care.

SonoMask Models

There are two different SonoMask models (SonoMask and SonoMask Pro) that offer different filtration and protection capacities. The higher-end models may provide a personalized fit for additional comfort.

SonoMask

The entry-level SonoMask filters up to 84% of particles as small as 3 microns, thanks to its two-layer fabric construction. While this mask may not be as effective as an N95 mask, it can be more effective than a cloth or disposable mask. Plus, the zinc antimicrobial coating resists bacteria growth.

This mask has several comfort features that can provide a snug fit:

  • Adjustable nose wire (prevent air leakage and foggy glasses)
  • Adjustable ear loops or head strap

You can choose between earloops or dual head straps to secure the mask.

The mask also covers your chin but doesn’t provide an extra-fit chin guard that stretches under your jaw. This mask is TSA-compliant, and you can wear it on an airplane.

You might prefer the SonoMask to the higher-end SonoMask Pro if you want a slightly cheaper mask.

SonoMask Pro
The SonoMask Pro can filter put to 99.9% of viruses and bacteria.

SonoMask Pro

Choose the SonoMask Pro for the highest protection and comfort levels.

It has a 97% filtration level for particles of 3 microns (vs. 84% for the basic SonoMask).

This mask provides these additional safety/comfort features:

  • Reinforced nose wire
  • Extra-fit chin guard
  • Triple-layer fabric construction

You can secure the mask with adjustable ear loops or head straps.

SonoMask vs. SonoMask Pro

Either SonoMask model can provide more protection than your average mask.

Here are some of the key differences between the SonoMask and SonoMask Pro:

  • Filtration capacity: The SonoMask Pro has a 97% filtration level (3 microns) instead of 84% for the base model as it has three fabric layers instead of two.
  • Breathability: You may have better breathability with the 2-ply SonoMask as it has one less layer than the 3-ply Pro. However, you have reduced filtration capacity.
  • Nose wire: The SonoMask Pro has a reinforced, adjustable nose wire, while the basic mask only offers an adjustable wire.
  • Chin guard: The SonoMask Pro provides a snug, extra-fit chin guard while the SonoMask is looser.
  • Sizes: The SonoMask is available in three sizes (S-L), and the SonoMask Pro offers four sizes (S-XL).

You will also see a slight price difference between both models of approximately $14.

SonoMask vs. N95

The SonoMask and N95 masks can both offer maximum protection when you travel, work, attend school, or run errands.

An N95 may have be better as they have a filtration capacity of up to 95% for particles as small as 0.3 microns. The SonoMask is 97% effective against 3-micron particles and doesn’t have a rating for smaller particles.

However, the SonoMask and SonoMask Pro can offer more protection than your standard cloth or multi-layer fabric masks, thanks to its zinc coating that actively works to prohibit bacteria and fungi growth. This mask is also reusable and can be cheaper long-term.

An N95 is a disposable mask and may also be effective at filtering smaller particles. You may prefer this mask if you don’t want to wash your face mask. However, N95 masks lack the zinc coat protection to repel bacteria from forming on the interior of your mask as you breathe.

SonoMask Size Guide

These masks are available in three different sizes:

  • Small: Kids age 4-11
  • Medium: Mostly women
  • Large: Mostly men

The SonoMask Pro also offers an extra-large size.

The Sonovia sizing guide has instructions to measure the width and length of your face to choose the proper size.

SonoMask FAQs

Here are some of the common questions about the SonoMask.

Is the SonoMask FDA approved?

Neither SonoMask nor SonoMask Pro have formal FDA approval and cannot be used for medical purposes or for handling hazardous materials.

However, these masks have FDA approval for emergency use during the pandemic to wear for commercial air travel and other public settings.

Is the SonoMask washable?

Yes, Sonovia recommends hand washing your SonoMask or SonoMask Pro in warm water (104 degrees Fahrenheit/40 Celsius) at least once per week.

You can lay flat or hang to air dry. Eco-friendly detergents are acceptable to remove stains.

You should avoid using softeners and bleaching agents.

Are SonoMasks comfortable?

Several user testimonials indicate the mask is lightweight and comfortable. However, you may need to upgrade to the SonoMask Pro to have optimal protection at your nose and chin.

Some customers complain that the entry-level SonoMask doesn’t cover their face to their liking like an N95 or surgical mask might.

The SonoMask and SonoMask Pro are available with ear straps or dual head straps to secure your mask. This option can also affect your comfort depending on if you prefer tension on your ears or head.

Where are SonoMasks made?

SonoMasks are made in Israel and ship to several international destinations, including the United States.

Summary

Many people prefer cloth face masks for their comfort and reusability. However, these masks are not the most effective at blocking viruses and bacteria. The SonoMask provides the comfort and environmental advantages of a cloth mask and can be better at filtering bacteria and protecting your health.
