The consumer Southwest Airlines credit cards periodically offer enhanced signup bonuses every so often—and there’s one right now. This exciting offer includes earning a Southwest Companion Pass plus points! New cardmembers can earn a promotional Companion Pass, which is valid through 02/28/2022, plus 30,000 points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.

Eligible cards that feature the enhanced bonus are the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card, and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card.

Here’s a closer look at how one travel companion can fly for free when you do.

Southwest Companion Pass and Points Offer

New applicants can earn a promotional Companion Pass, which is valid through 02/28/2022, plus 30,000 points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.

That’s practically one year of free Companion Pass. Normally, Rapid Rewards members must fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 125,000 Rapid Rewards points in one year.

While having the Companion Pass, the pass holder can book a Southwest flight with points or cash. One designated travel companion gets a free ticket but fees and taxes apply ($5.60 each way for most flights).

A one-way flight from California to Hawaii requires less than 20,000 points on most travel days. The 30,000 bonus points can book an award roundtrip on some days, plus fees and taxes. This bonus can essentially book a free award trip for you and one travel companion.

Participating Cards

The Companion Pass offer is active for these three consumer cards:

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card
  • The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card

This limited-time offer is available for new card applications through March 10, 2021.

Who Might Qualify?

This credit card offer is available to new cardmembers that currently do not have a consumer Southwest Airlines credit card. Returning cardmembers can qualify if the last Southwest Airlines signup bonus was earned at least 24 months ago.

Applicants who currently have a Business or Employee card can qualify for this offer. Just an FYI, Southwest offers two business credit cards — the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Business Credit Card and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Performance Business Credit Card.

Other Card Benefits

In addition to the promotional Companion Pass, which is valid through 02/28/2022, plus 30,000 points (after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening), cardmembers can enjoy other card benefits.

Benefits and the annual fees vary by card. But here are some common traits:

  • Cardmember anniversary bonus
  • Earn up to 2x Rapid Rewards on Southwest purchases
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Baggage delay insurance
  • No blackout dates on award flight redemptions
  • Points never expire

Plus, Southwest allows travelers two free checked bags and open seating.

All purchases earn Rapid Rewards points that count toward renewing the Companion Pass benefits beyond February 28, 2022.

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card offers the most benefits. For example, this card offers an annual $75 Southwest travel credit and 4 Upgraded Bookings per year (when available).

Summary of the Southwest Companion Pass and Points Offer

Airlines seats are at some of their cheapest prices in recent years due to the travel restrictions. The Companion Pass was one of the best award travel deals pre-pandemic. This offer can not only help you maximize your points for when award flight prices increase, but it also allows you to potentially bring a buddy along.

Once again, eligible cards that feature the enhanced bonus of the promotional Companion Pass, which is valid through 02/28/2022, plus 30,000 points (after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening) are the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card, and the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card.
