Sign up for STEP notifications from the U.S. State DepartmentAs we wrote two weeks back, the U.S. State Department has just updated its travel advisory system.

The Safe Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) notification system now includes updates in the new style, and it remains worth taking advantage of. It works like this: You go to this page and sign up for destination-related safety (etc.) alerts. You can choose to receive email notifications related to a specific upcoming trip, to specific destinations (irrespective of when or if you’ll travel there), or—if you’re a frequent traveler like I am—to newsworthy developments (as determined by the State Department) all over the world.

Just as importantly, logging a specific upcoming trip through STEP means that the U.S. government will know to contact and even help you in the event of an overseas emergency in your area. I strongly recommend making use of STEP!
