A Tip for Parents Flying With a Lap Baby

Each Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Pax T., who says:

“My husband and I politely asked if it would be possible for one of us to receive our meal at the end of meal service. This allowed one of us to hold our lap baby while the other ate. So much easier in the tight seats of coach. We didn’t fly much but were always accommodated.”

Thanks, Pax! And for more tips on traveling with a baby, see this post!

As a former flight attendant (and parent) who viewed film footage of numerous airplane accidents and mostly survivable crashes during training, I saw babies jerked out of their parent’s arms and went flying in the cabin. Almost all died. It is extremely unsafe and foolish to fly with a baby or toddler in one’s lap to save a few dollars on a plane ticket. Any parent who flies with an infant in their lap is rolling dice with the life of their child. As a parent with a now 20 year old boy, my son ALWAYS traveled on planes seated in his car seat, strapped into his own seat. The cost of a paid seat on the plane was not worth gambling with the life of my child.

  2. I appreciate the safety of a car seat for an infant but keep in mind that it’s safer to fly in an airplane than to walk down the sidewalk. All risks are relative and many new parents don’t have the economic choice to buy an extra ticket for their infant.
