Does Travel Insurance Cover Preexisting Conditions?

Does travel insurance cover preexisting conditions? When buying travel insurance, can preexisting medical conditions affect your coverage? The answer is yes, and not all plans cover cancellations/etc. related to them. Of course, it’s a little more complicated than that. Our friends at Allianz Global Assistance get a lot of questions about just this topic, which is why they put together the short video below. Give it a look, and see this page for more on how to deal with preexisting conditions when buying travel insurance.

The most important takeaway here is to make sure you know exactly what your plan covers before you buy it. Read the policy in full, and if you need to, speak to a representative on the phone. You never know how much it might end up mattering.

  1. I have gotten travel insurance every time I travel overseas, the most important thing is many companies have quick and easy ways to buy insurance online but if you don’t see what you want you need to call them and find out if they provide what you need. If the company you are dealing with doesn’t have what you are looking for don’t hesitate to find another company. I like to be loyal to the travel companies I buy from but if they can’t provide me what what I need I look for another company. After it is me I am trying to protect not the company.

  2. I’m considering applying for the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card for it’s many benefits. One money saving feature is the travel insurance benefit that comes with the credit card. After reading your posts recommending purchasing travel insurance, I’m left wondering about the adequacy of the Credit Card travel insurance. I’m primarily concerned about accident and illness coverage preventing me from going on a trip. Can you please comment on the major differences between purchasing Travel Insurance vs the Credit Card coverage?
