Travel and photography have always been a perfect match. A great photo can help you remember a trip, or a moment, and it can tell a story that words simply cannot. Recently, as smartphone cameras and social media have changed the way we share our travels (I’m johnnyjet on Instagram), camera technology has advanced to places once thought to be impossible. My DSLR has helped me capture some truly incredible photos in Italy, Kenya, Thailand, Bulgaria, and more.

Of course, with so many good cameras, lenses and equipment available today, a travel photography habit can get expensive quickly. That’s why I believe a good camera strap is essential for anyone who carries a camera.

iMo—which stands for “in my opinion”—is a Hong Kong-based company that excels in sturdy, personalized camera fashion and equipment—including camera straps. They recently sent me a couple of their straps, and I already love them. Each iMo strap is comfortable, with leather on one side, and durable, with neoprene on the other (Wikipedia says neoprene “exhibits good chemical stability and maintains flexibility over a wide temperature range”). Each can hold up to 90 pounds comfortably and comes with quick-release buckles that make it easy to pop your camera on and off the strap as needed, including when a tripod is involved. And iMo straps cost just $29.95, a very affordable price considering how valuable the cameras they protect usually are.

The other really cool thing about iMo camera straps is their design options. iMo has 53 different straps with all of the same qualities, all for the same $29.95. They’re sort of like Buff headwear, which offers its product in seemingly limitless designs. My favorite iMo camera strap is the map camera strap, but there are many, many more.

Additionally: As I’ve written before (sign up for my Daily Travel Tip newsletter here), wearing a non-branded camera strap is a smart idea, as it shares nothing about the value of your camera. As the professional photographer on Leo Laporte’s show pointed out, the branded camera strap that comes with your camera advertises to everyone—including would-be thieves—what make of camera you’re carrying. This just puts you more at risk of having your camera stolen.

So, if you like to travel with a camera, and especially if you’ve sunk some money into your travel photography, take a look at an iMo camera strap. Protect your camera by picking an option here:

    Hi Johnny,
what camera do you use for your travel photography? Maybe you write a post sharing what’s in your bag?
    Cheers
