Short bio: Alyssa Caverley is a travel journalist who reports from all over the globe. She is currently producing and hosting an online experiential travel show called #ModernTraveler, which she also created and got completely funded and sponsored, set to air on Larry King’s digital network Ora.tv. The show covers everything from local food to local experiences, focusing on the way we travel now. It is heavily focused on social media and using social media as inspiration for the best restaurants and activities to do while discovering a country’s cultural side through the locals who know it best. Prior to becoming an expert in the field of travel and tourism, she was a news journalist, launching her news career in Columbia, Missouri, where she was a reporter, anchor and producer for KOMU TV-8 (NBC affiliate).

How often do you fly? Less now, but still about once or twice a month.

How many countries have you been to? 35+

How many continents have you been to? 6

Earliest travel memory: Landing in Paris and rushing to see the Eiffel Tower at night to see it light up the city.

Favorite American city: New York (as a west coast girl there’s just something so appealing about the concrete jungle).

Favorite international city: Paris (cliché, but it’s just so chic!).

Least favorite country: Malaysia (until I go back) I spent almost the whole trip in the hospital (nothing to do with the country), so it doesn’t leave me with the greatest memories.

I have no desire to go to: Syria (at the moment, but I hope things get better over there).

Friendliest people in the world: Canadian (and the Swiss).

Country with the meanest immigration officers: America (for real!) I’m on a visa and they give me a hard time quite a bit.

Favorite World Heritage Site: Pyramids of Giza/Vinales Valley in Cuba.

Favorite airline: Etihad (I had a very pleasant trip home from Abu Dhabi).

Favorite aircraft type: A380.

Aisle or window: Window.

Favorite airport lounge: Delta lounge at JFK.

Favorite U.S. airport: Minneapolis (if I have to choose a large hub).

Favorite international airport: Schiphol.

Favorite hotel: Fistral Beach Hotel in Newquay, England.

Favorite cruise line: Viking River Cruises.

Favorite travel credit card: Chase Sapphire.

Favorite island: Bermuda.

Favorite beach: Rivera Maya in Mexico (pristine white beaches with turquoise water).

Favorite National Park: Badlands National Park.

Favorite fancy restaurant: Cicconi’s in West Hollywood (keeping it local!).

Favorite fruit: Strawberries (with chocolate of course!).

Favorite food: Pizza or pasta (basically anything with carbs—I’m easy!).

Least favorite food: Raw fish (I don’t do well in Japan).

Drink of choice (in the air and on the ground): Champagne.

Favorite travel movie(s): Midnight in Paris (not really a travel movie, but always gets me in the mood to visit Paris).

Right now I am reading: Cause Celeb” by Helen Fielding (fascinating look at celebrity “volunteer” trips around the world).

Favorite travel website(s)—besides JohnnyJet.com, of course! The Points Guy, Conde Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure.

5 things you bring on a plane: Moisturizer, iPad, books, headphones, Dramamine (to put me to sleep).

What do you always seem to forget? Headphones!!

What do you like least about travel? Long layovers.

What do you want your loved one to buy you from an airport Duty Free store? Estee Lauder mascara.

Favorite travel app(s): GateGuru (awesome for when you are in an unfamiliar airport).

Most embarrassing travel moment: Forgetting my passport on an airplane because I stupidly put it in the seat pocket in front of me. Never got it back and had to get an emergency temporary one.

I’m embarrassed I haven’t been to: Italy (truly embarrassing!).

Worst travel moment: Getting sick in Malaysia and having to spend almost all of my trip in the hospital (most memorable, but not for the right reasons).

What’s your dream destination? Tetiaroa atoll  (small island in French Polynesia that used to be owned by Marlon Brando and is not home to one lone resort called The Brando).

Favorite travel charity: Three Avocados. They promote clean water throughout Africa and do some great things on the ground

Best travel tip: Long flights are tough. Find a routine that works for you to put you to sleep for those long hauls. Mine is drinking a glass or two of wine followed by two Dramamine tablets (they are very harmless motion sickness pills, but they put me right to sleep). It makes traveling that much better when you are going on hour 10 in a confined place and feel like you are about to go crazy!

OMG, haven’t been to Italy, that’s quite a shame. It’s a great country, specially the north and center. It’s time to go over that 35 countries mark :)
