Short bio: I am an LA native and I love it. In my last semester of college I won a full-ride scholarship, which allowed me to take my first international trip just after graduating. That’s when I was bitten with the travel bug. I worked in television news for a couple years in San Diego before returning to Los Angeles. I also worked as a 5th grade teacher and substitute taught high school Spanish, Geometry and Algebra. I knew I wanted to be a travel television host, but all the job postings I found called for a white, male, 50+. I couldn’t check off one box. So I hired myself and created my own travel show, Rhythm Abroad with Brittany Pierce, now airing nationally on public television. Aside from travel, I love to cook healthy, organic food packed with lots of flavor. I enjoy speaking Spanish whenever the opportunity presents itself and laughing with family and friends.

How often do you fly? Surprisingly only once a month depending on my shoot schedule. Sometimes it could be more, but I like spending time at home too.

How many countries have you been to? 16 and counting.

How many continents have you been to? 4…I really need to work on making it to the Motherland.

Earliest travel memory: Every year we would take a road trip to visit family in Phoenix, AZ. I would hop in the car still in my pajamas and would get the best sleep ever.

Favorite American city: San Francisco, CA.

Favorite international city: Sevilla, Spain. The feeling of passion and romance throughout the city overtakes you.

Least favorite country: I thought…and thought…and I really don’t have a least favorite. Each country is so unique.

I have no desire to go to: Hell, if it really exists as the Bible describes it to be.

Friendliest people in the world: Nicaraguans.

Country with the meanest immigration officers: They’re all pretty rude. I just do as I am told, so I can make it to my destination.

Favorite World Heritage Site: Having just returned from Peru, I would have to say Machu Picchu.

Favorite airline: To date…Singapore Airlines.

Favorite aircraft type: Any big airplane that will get me to my destination safely.

Aisle or window: Window if seated in first class or in the emergency exit row. Aisle seat for all other scenarios…I like to stretch my legs and have easy access to the restroom and overhead bin.

Favorite airport lounge: Haven’t been in enough lounges to have a favorite.

Favorite U.S. airport: I don’t have one. They all look the same to me, but if I woke up in any Hawaiian airport tomorrow, I would be happy.

Favorite international airport: Hong Kong simply because it was clean and modern looking.

Favorite hotel: Villa Agung Khalia in Bali, Indonesia—beautiful, understated luxury set amongst the rice fields of Ubud.

Favorite cruise line: I haven’t cruised enough to have a favorite.

Favorite travel credit card: Any that will allow me to rack up reward points in exchange for flights or money back.

Favorite island: Moorea, Tahiti.

Favorite beach: As a kid, I loved Thorn Hill Broom Beach off PCH just south of Oxnard, CA. It was always so quiet and peaceful. Now, I have been to so many, it’s too hard to choose a favorite. Can’t I just like them all?

Favorite fancy restaurant: The Carnelian Room in San Francisco…good memories.

Favorite hole-in-the-wall: House of Nanking in San Francisco.

Favorite bar: I’m not much of a drinker, so I don’t spend much time in bars.

Favorite fruit: Salak, lychee and watermelon.

Favorite food: Mexican food hands down!

Least favorite food: I wasn’t too fond of Balinese food. There were a couple of dishes I liked like soto ayam and mie goreng, but overall not my favorite. I also didn’t care for the food high in the Andes of Peru—too many starchy foods and not enough greens.

Drink of choice (in the air and on the ground): Sparkling water while flying and a good vanilla latte with only one pump of vanilla from Starbucks.

Favorite travel movie(s): How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Under the Tuscan Sun, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Favorite travel show(s): Probably my own, Rhythm Abroad, but a good nod goes to The Amazing Race.

Favorite travel book(s): I don’t read “travel” books, but I thoroughly enjoy books that give me a look into a different culture. Some of my favorites are “Kaffir Boy” by Mark Mathabane, “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini, “Woman at Point Zero” by Nawal El Saadawi, and “Memoirs of a Geisha” by Arthur Golden.

Right now I am reading: Modern Romance” by Aziz Ansari.

Top 3 favorite travel newsletters/magazines/blogs: The first travel magazine I picked up was Condé Nast Traveler, but when Afar hit the stands I really appreciated the amount of articles vs. advertisements in the magazine. I don’t have much time to spend on blogs, so I don’t have a favorite. I’m out in the world creating my own experiences.

Favorite travel website(s)—besides JohnnyJet.com, of course! TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet because they give me quick overviews, plenty of photos, weather info, top attractions, and traveler advice.

5 things you bring on a plane: Warm jacket (I am always cold), neck pillow, toothbrush, camera, and my iPad (I never end up using it).

What do you always seem to forget? I have a packing list that I look over for each trip, so I don’t forget anything. If it’s not on the packing list, it will most likely get left behind.

What do you like least about travel? 3 pm hotel check-in and 12 pm checkout. Also, eating out way too much.

What do you want your loved one to buy you from an airport Duty Free store? A nice bottle of perfume…you can’t go wrong with that one.

Favorite travel app(s): I use Google Translate and WhatsApp to connect with local people and to stay connected with people back home and people I meet on my travels.

Most embarrassing travel moment: Upon landing in Bali, Indonesia, airport security “randomly” chose my suitcase to be searched. And what do they question me about? My tampons and laxatives. How do you explain the uses of those two?

I’m embarrassed but I haven’t been to: The continent of Africa.

Worst travel moment: Driving to Baños, Ecuador on a tour bus, in the rain, alongside cliffs with no guard rails at night.

What’s your dream destination? Seychelles and Vanuatu.

Favorite travel charity: Days for Girls, an organization providing girls with sustainable feminine hygiene products so that they don’t have to miss school.

Best travel tip: Every now and then put down the camera, live in the moment and enjoy the experience at hand.
