Short Bio: Heather Greenwood Davis is an award-winning freelance writer, travel columnist, speaker and journalist. The family was just named (Nov. 2012) as “Travelers of the Year” by National Geographic Traveler Magazine. In June 2011 she and her husband, Ish, dropped everything, pulled their two sons under the age of 10 out of school and traveled the world for a year. The family stopped in 29 countries on six continents. Along the way Heather shared the journey via social media, online magazines, their blog (www.globetrottingmama.com) and traditional media channels. You may have read her work in The Toronto Star, Canadian Family, Budget Travel, Hemispheres and other publications. She has also appeared on national news programs and radio stations. When not on the road you can find her crossing off the days on the calendar until the next big trip.

How often do you fly:  Most years I’m on a plane 10 times a year (round trips). During our yearlong trip around the world we were on a plane as often as several times a week.

How many countries have you been to: I’m not sure. Last year we hit 29 but usually I don’t like to count. I’d rather keep track of the experiences and the numbers don’t mean much to me.

How many continents have you been to: Six. Antarctica is the only one left but I have a serious aversion to cold weather (why yes I am from Canada, why do you ask?;)) so that one might take a while.

Favorite American city: It changes all the time. Lately: Philadelphia

Favorite international city: I can never pick just one: Lisbon, Portugal; Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; Mumbai, India

Favorite airline: It’s a tie. For long haul international, I love Emirates. I did a story where I flew to Dubai in seat 1A of an A380 a few years ago and the economy rides since have been hard on the ego. For shorter flights, I’m a big fan of WestJet Airlines. Great staff and comfy seats. And if I could pick a third it would have to be Porter Airlines. They’re a great airline that takes flying back to a time when customers came first.

Favorite aircraft type: That A380 is hard to top.

Aisle or window: Window – preferably with an empty seat beside me.

Favorite international airport: Singapore’s Changi Airport

Favorite island: Petit St. Vincent and Prince Edward Island

Favorite fruit: Pineapple

Favorite food: Anything I didn’t cook

Least favorite food:  Porridge. Seriously. Gross.

Drink of choice (In the air and on the ground) : Cold Pinot Grigio. Anywhere.

Favorite travel show(s): Rarely watch TV.

Favorite travel book(s): I like to read works of fiction in the place where they’re set. Most recently it was  “White Tiger” in India. Fabulous.

Right now I am reading: Brene Brown’s “Daring Greatly” and Andrew McCarthy’s “The Longest Way Home.” In so many ways they are the same story.

Favorite travel website(s) – besides JohnnyJet.com, of course!: I like to read sites of people I’ve traveled with. Two I love to check in on are  wanderingcarol.com and camelsandchocolate.com.

Five things you bring on a plane: Pen, notepad, headphones, iPhone,  way more work than I’ll ever get done on the flight.

What do you always seem to forget: Pyjamas

What do you want your loved one to buy you from an airport duty free store? Skip the duty-free! I’ve got a long list of things I’d never buy but would love to try from the Skymall catalogue.

Favorite travel iPhone app(s):  They aren’t travel specific but Tweetdeck (love micro-blogging from a new destination) and Dropbox (peace of mind that I can get to that half-written article I left at home.)

Most embarrassing/worst travel moment:  Realizing we’d neglected to get our Chinese travel visa until it was almost too late. Yup, even travel writers do stuff like that.

What’s your dream destination: Lived the dream with our year away. New dream is to do it again in slow motion.

Favorite travel charity: Right To Play. I love what they do for kids around the world. Right now I’m working with them on a campaign to raise awareness for peace through play and collecting votes to build awareness here: bit.ly/LevelTheField

Best travel tip:  You’ll never have time and money at the same time. Time is the one you should be most worried about. Go now.
