Short bio: Jonathan and Drew Scott are the charismatic twin brothers who star in HGTV’s hit series Property Brothers, Buying & Selling and Brother Vs. Brother. Along with their winning blend of sibling rivalry and humor, they have a rare knack for finding fixer-uppers and turning them into perfect properties. Jonathan, a renowned designer and licensed contractor, and Drew, a seasoned agent, have bought and renovated real estate for over 15 years. The brothers’ fresh, functional approach has found success in cities across North America and around the world. With their broad experience and complementary skills, the dynamic, design-savvy duo can solve any property problem.

When not working on their popular series, they pursue other projects—Drew as an actor and director, Jonathan as an award-winning illusionist. As sports enthusiasts both brothers hold 2nd-degree black belts in karate and have taken part in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Games. They also serve as global ambassadors for World Vision, working to improve child protection domestically and abroad.

How often do you fly? After looking at my flight rewards balance…a lot! At least a couple times per week.

How many countries have you been to? More than I can count on my fingers, toes and anything else.

How many continents have you been to? North America, South America, Europe and Asia.

Earliest travel memory: As kids we travelled with my family to Scotland and stayed at an old castle that had been converted into a hostel. The castle was riddled with secret passageways and mysteries. I remember reenacting a knight’s battle with branches as swords. It was an incredible way to foster the creativity of a child and expand ones horizons.

Favorite American city: You can’t beat New York City. It’s a metropolis with energy like no other. No matter what you want to do, at any time of the day or night…you’ve got options.

Favorite international city: Bora Bora isn’t clarified as a city…and Drew took Florence…so I’d have to go with Paris. I spend night after night adventuring through the city on my own meeting strangers and soaking up the romance in the air. I loved it.

Least favorite country: No matter where I go, I source out the best a city has to offer. I can have a blast in a hole-in-the-wall pub or in a touristy theme park.

Friendliest people in the world: Istanbul, Turkey. The people were so charming and warm and made us feel very welcome. Even in the markets, the bartering was VERY playful.

Country with the meanest immigration officers: I may have told an immigration office one time that he should be the employee of the month. That didn’t go over well. And I won’t say where. Haha.

Favorite World Heritage Site: I would say Rome, particularly the Colosseum and Forum. There is so much history to see.

Favorite airline: Virgin Airlines provides a fun, energetic, enjoyable environment. I love how Branson has shaped the airline to be a stand-alone experience in the aviation realm.

Favorite aircraft type: Millennium Falcon. Obviously. It can do a Kessel run in under 12 parsecs. Lol.

Aisle or window: Definitely window. I like to sleep against the wall. To be more specific, the second row, starboard window is my favorite. I’m not that particular ;)

Favorite airport lounge: The Centurion Lounges are the best. Full chef-prepared buffet meals, showers and an atmosphere that feels more like a destination that somewhere you’re just idly waiting.

Favorite U.S. airport: The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is outstanding because it offers a slice of the entire Austin experience. Great live music, delicious food from Salt Lick and the airport staff is extremely approachable.

Favorite international airport: Amsterdam Schiphol International is a beautiful airport with excellent restaurant and lounge options. There’s a casino, spa and massive outdoor ‘courtyard’ that was full of interesting sculptures that made for great selfies :)

Favorite hotel: St. Regis and Le Meridien are my two favorite hotel chains in the world. The buildings are immaculate and boast plenty of history. They also know how to take customer service to the next level.

Favorite cruise line: Carnival. I’ve done about 14 cruises with them and will be hosting a cruise for fans November 16th through November 20th. More information here.

Favorite island: Bora Bora. Very underdeveloped so you don’t feel like you’re in a “touristy” destination. Everywhere you look feels like a postcard.

Favorite beach: When I was in Cuba years ago, I MAY have gone skinny-dipping in the ocean and it was so warm it felt like bath water. I have never experienced that before and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Favorite fancy restaurant: Spago at Caesars Forum in Las Vegas is still one of my favorite upscale restaurants. The best staff, amazing food. It’s a must-try.

Favorite hole-in-the-wall: The Ear Inn in NYC has been around forever and has a very laid-back vibe. Perfect place to kick back and shoot the whatever with friends.

Favorite fruit: Pomegranate.

Favorite food: Sushi, no-brainer.

Least favorite food: Sea urchin

Drink of choice (in the air and on the ground): Mostly water. Sometimes a Sprite mixed with OJ.

Favorite travel movie(s): Like Drew, I also watched Fury on my Tokyo flight. Most times I’ve seen all the new releases, so I watch classics like Dirty Dancing or Back to the Future.

Favorite travel show(s): Forensic Files, or anything about technology.

Favorite travel book(s): I love biographies about historic people from where I’m traveling to…then I trace their life.

Right now I am reading: Popular Science. Yep, proud nerd.

Top 3 favorite travel newsletters/magazines/blogs: Tiny Atlas Quarterly, Adventure Journal and Parts Unknown.

5 things you bring on a plane: My own headphones, cell for music, airborne vitamin tablets, hand lotion, chocolate for the flight crew.

What do you always seem to forget?: Hair paste. That’s why I bring a hat.

What do you like least about travel? Get a sore back from flying too much.

What do you want your loved one to buy you from an airport Duty Free store? Toblerone please…first I need a loved one. Lol.

Favorite travel app(s): InternationalSOS. Warns you of everything and anything you may need to know while abroad.

Most embarrassing travel moment: There are too many to list! One was in Munich, Germany, during Oktoberfest; it took two hours to get inside the big tent. After a while inside, I took a wrong turn to the bathroom and wound up out the exit from the kitchen. When I tired to go back in, security thought I was trying to sneak in. They made a big scene and kicked me out. I had to sit outside for another two hours until my friends came out.

Worst travel moment: When in New Dehli, I got food poisoning and threw up in a van on the way to the Taj Mahal. All I wanted to do was crawl into bed, but unfortunately it’s all walking there.

What’s your dream destination? I’d love to travel to Africa and see all the wildlife on the plains.

Best travel tip: Wear metal-free clothing and be very organized so that you can breeze through security. Don’t be that person that holds everyone up.

When you decide to go to Africa on a safari, I’ll go! It’d be a dream come true… lions are majestic creatures, been up close but would love to see them in the wild! Of course, all the other animals too! Hyenas are pretty cool. Fed one in Ethiopia once.

I see you like Bora Bora… I’ve never been there… I should take my next vacation there!

Enjoyed the interview. May I suggest that, given the Cuba memory, you might enjoy Chico Hot Springs in Montana. While there you should check out the Boiling River Hot Springs just inside Yellowstone. Chico is known for excellent food, and historic hotel. We used to go to Boiling River to go “hotpotting” when I was in college (skinny dipping where the hot springs120 degrees flows into the river 40 degrees.) It was fun, but now it’s banned, but one can get the idea by swimming there anyway.
