Travel Tip of the Day: Bring a Backup Phone

iPhone

An old (once new) iPhone

Bring a Backup Phone
Yesterday’s tip was about getting a LifeProof case to protect your iPhone. In that tip, I mentioned that when I dropped and destroyed my iPhone on a biking tour in Austria, I would have been without a phone for the rest of my multi-country trip if I hadn’t been carrying my old Android in my bag. So, if you have an old phone that still works, bring it with you on your travels just in case you break or lose your primary phone. That way, you can easily swap the SIM card out—or get a new SIM card—so you can stay connected.

  1. I ALWAYS carry a backup old phone on every trip and use it as a second alarm clock. I put it in the bathroom or across the room which requires me to get out of bed to shut it off. I never fall back to sleep.

Great if you have two unlocked phones. A brand new unlocked phone able to accept your SIM card would cost you the equiv. of twenty GBP. I know. I’ve done it.

  3. Good tip! Another good use for that “old” smartphone is using it when you’re going somewhere you don’t feel completely safe. You don’t want to go with no phone, in case you need to call for help, directions, etc. But, if you’re concerned about pickpockets, it’s much less painful to lose an old phone than a shiny new one.
