Check One-Way Pricing When Booking Multi-City Trips
My buddy Brett from CrankyFlier recently nominated American, Delta and United for Cranky Jackass awards for forcing travelers to overpay for multi-city trips. It’s a complex issue, but if you need to book a multi-city trip, you now need to book each flight as individual one-ways to avoid overpaying by potentially thousands of dollars.

I take multi-city trips all the time and I’m actually pricing one out for next month. I plan to go from LA to Lexington, KY, and then to Florida before going home. The prices that have been coming up are insane. but thanks to the tip from Brett I’ll now be pricing the flights out as one-ways. As his posts suggests: “You should always check one way pricing now to make sure you’re not getting screwed.”

The AP’s Scott Mayerowitz explains: “American, Delta and United stopped allowing individual nonrefundable tickets to be combined. Their websites now only offer fully refundable tickets when combining one-way legs, which are often several times more expensive than the non-refundable tickets most people buy.”

He goes on to discuss why the airlines were compelled to change policies, and to say that the changes have inspired at least one cry of collusion to the Department of Justice. New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has also called for a federal investigation. For now, make sure to price out one-ways!

This is certainly true! I just booked flights to and from Alaska for this summer, but the first leg was into Seattle and the return out of Anchorage. Booking two one-ways saved about $400!
