I just returned from Mexico for the first time in years (I attended the TBEX Cancun conference and stayed at an all-inclusive resort, which I really liked). On the plane ride down, the flight attendants handed out the usual Mexico immigration forms, which reminded me to share a valuable tip: Always fill out the whole customs form—especially the backside, which is your departure card.

Most first-time travelers to Mexico don’t fill the back out, thinking they can do it when they return to the airport on their way home, but that’s a mistake. The reason why? When you get to immigration, an agent will check to see if your forms are completely filled out and if they aren’t, he or she will make you step out of line to do it. Those short few minutes can end up costing you twenty or more minutes depending on your seat on how many people there are around you.
