Travel Tip of the Day: Help Your Belongings through Security

Conveyor beltHelp Your Belongings through Security
When going through security at a U.S. airport, be sure to push your belongings onto the conveyor belt. You’d be surprised how many clueless people I see just standing there waiting for some nowhere-to-be-found agent to tell them what to do. Or, they leave their belongings on the table while they walk through security. Always push your bags and bins onto the conveyor belt unless told not to. It helps to speed the process up for everyone.

  1. Yes, I will help push my stuff thru the conveyor belt, BUT I hold onto the tray until I have been called to go thru the X-ray machine. Also, since I usually travel with my wife, I have her go thru the machine first with my warning her to watch for our trays on the other side of X-ray.

Another tip would be to tell people to take off jacket, shoes, take out laptop before they get up to the table to put their stuff in the bins. Some people are in hurry to get to their flights so waiting for those who act like they have no idea that they have to do this can be disruptive.

  2. Keep valuables (tickets, passports) in your possession (pockets, moneybelt, neck wallet, etc). Kept mine in a fanny pack, and almost forgot to take it off the conveyor).

  3. this is a little bit of a pet peeve of mine also…..I, too, usually go thru if we are a couple traveling. If I am by myself I, too, hang on to my tray, particularly my purse, and then go through when called.

  4. Totally agree! The key I reken is to be prepared, don’t just stand in line mindlessly staring into space, make sure that all the stuff you KNOW is going to be taken out is ready and sitting towards the top of your hand-carry, then undo your shoes/belt etc.. before getting to the front of the line. It amazing me how people wait for 20 mins watching the line then when they get to the front, take ages sorting themselves out.. a little foresight people!
