TSAHow to Avoid Getting Your Cash Stolen by a TSA Agent
Earlier this week, a TSA agent was caught stealing $61 from a man’s wallet at New York’s JFK airport. The mistake the passenger committed—and I see this all the time—was making it too easy for the sticky-fingered agent/thief (of course, he shouldn’t have to worry about that, but alas).

Instead of putting his wallet in the bin, the man should have put it in his bag or a jacket pocket. When I go through security, I put mine in one of Scottevest’s (full disclosure: They are a sponsor) multiple hidden pockets. Keep your wallet and valuables as out of reach as possible. And if you don’t carry a wallet and/or aren’t bringing on a bag or jacket on a flight, hold your cash and credit cards in your hand through security.

What this passenger did do that was smart was doublecheck the contents of his wallet after clearing security and then report the theft to a supervisor. Be aware, and be thorough.

I ALWAYS carry my cash with me in hand when going through TSA screening. I take multiple trips to Las Vegas each year and always have hundreds if not thousands of dollars with me. The stack of cash is always in my hand as I do the body screeners. Only once has the TSA agent asked to see my rubber banned roll of money. They just flexed it to make sure I wasn’t hiding anything in between the bills.
