Know the Prices
An article I just read in the NY Post—“American couple calls cops after paying $50 for gelato in Rome—offered a detailed report on an American couple that called the cops after a vendor charged them more than $50 for three gelatos at Bar II Cafe, near the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Upon arrival, the cops determined the prices were perfectly legal since they were listed on the menu.
The (main) lesson learned here is this: Don’t order without looking at the prices—and with that, don’t go to a gelato place that’s empty. If it’s good and reasonably priced, there will likely be a line out the door. Since that’s not true every time, here’s contributor Jennifer Dombrowski’s (@jdomb) 12 Things You Never Knew About Italy, which includes advice on how to spot artisanal gelato.
