American's new B777-300ER landing in Los Angeles

Last Chance to Sign Up for American Status Challenge
Gary Leff‘s View from the Wing is reporting (in part based on this thread) that tomorrow—Wednesday, September 23—the current American Airlines elite status challenge may be changing. Completing a paid status challenge allows flyers to, for a relatively small fee, fly a reduced amount with an airline in a designated time frame in order to earn elite status. With the current American challenge, for example:

  • You can earn Platinum status by paying $200-$240 and earning 10,000 points in three months (instead of 50,000 points or 60 segments in a year)
  • You can earn Gold status by paying $100-$140 and earning 5,000 points in three months (instead of 25,000 points or 30 segments in a year)

As Gary notes, the challenge may or may not continue after September 23, but the evidence suggests there is change ahead. If you want elite status, this might be worth signing up for. Just call AA at 1-800-882-8880 to get started.
