Beach flagSwim Within the Lifeguard Flags or Near Lifeguard Stands
I live near the beach in Los Angeles and over the years, I’ve come to learn that the safest place to swim is between the lifeguard flags, which are usually right in front of the lifeguard stand. You may know this, but don’t discount how important it is to consider safety in the open water (here’s an old tip on water safety and another on rip currents). If you hit the beach this summer—especially this July 4 weekend, a popular time to go to the beach—and there’s a lifeguard stand, swim next to it. Even better, ask the lifeguard where the safest place to swim is.

FYI: Outside of the flags, at least in southern California, is where surfers and boogie boarders can surf.
