Travel Tip of the Day: The Sun Also Shines

SunglassesThe Sun Also Shines
I learned a valuable lesson a few weeks ago while in Austria. When we arrived into Linz, it was cloudy and raining and just as we were about to hop on our tour bus for a two-hour drive to Salzburg, my wife reminded me to grab my sunglasses. Sunglasses…I chuckled. It was overcast and raining.

Sure enough, by the time we got to our destination, it was bright and sunny and I had a choice: squint the whole time or buy a new pair of sunglasses in a local shop. The cheapest pair I found were 15 euros. Don’t be a fool like me. If there’s even a chance the sun will come out, make sure to bring your sunglasses.

  1. Many centuries ago when I was stationed in Germany with Uncle Sam I learned how quickly the bright sun could reappear/disappear. Then for me sunglasses were not an option while on duty.

  2. Johnny, your REAL mistake was believing that you didn’t need sun protection on an overcast day. The UVB rays (the kind that cause sunburn) may be obscured by the cloud cover. The UVA rays (the kind that cause wrinkling, skin cancer, and cataracts) were unaffected. You would do your many readers a real service by posting an update advising them that sun protection – both skin and eye – is mandatory during all daylight hours. And, even better, please ask an ophthalmologist to write a guest post saying it better than I can. Thank you!
