Travel Tip of the Day: Wear Neutral Colors

VancouverWear Neutral Colors
All the recent excitement around the World Cup reminded me of a good travel tip, which is this: If you want to stay safe from rowdy drunks and goons just looking to pick a fight, then always where neutral (or home) colors—and not the colors or memorabilia of an opposing sports team—no matter which city, state or country you’re in.

For example, I’m a huge Yankees fan, but you’ll never catch me wearing my NY cap or pinstripe shirt in Boston, since I would just be asking for it. Or if I’m in England and Italy is playing them in a big match (as happened on June 14), I won’t be wearing my shirt that reads “Kiss me, I’m Italian.” Of course, it’s unlikely anything would come of it, but you never know who you’ll run into.

FYI: The photo above is from the TBEX conference in 2011 in Vancouver, which coincided with the Canucks’ (Vancouver’s hockey team) deep run in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

  1. HAHAHA! funny, you have sense of humor. I will wear neutral colors in traveling most specially in world cup. Great tips, thanks. :)

  2. In England there are very specific connotations about baseball caps–New York Yankees are frequently worn by young Protestants and Boston caps are worn by young Catholics.

  3. I once wore a Winnipeg Jets jersey to a Montreal Canadiens game. I thought that was pretty neutral (also a Canadian team, other side of the country, different conference), but I guess I was wrong. Fortunately, I didn’t have any problems, but someone booed me in the bathroom.
