Travel Tip of the Day: What to Do If the PreCheck Lane Isn’t Open

PreCheckWhat to Do If the PreCheck Lane Isn’t Open
If you have TSA PreCheck (here’s how to get it for free) but the PreCheck lane isn’t open at the airport that day, like it wasn’t for me recently at Miami International Airport, don’t despair yet. Tell a security agent that you’re a PreCheck member and ask if you can still get the benefits. They should tell you to just show your boarding pass to the agent in charge of the security line so you don’t have to take your shoes off or take your laptop and liquids out.

  1. This happened to me recently at LaGuardia. They did not have a separate TSA Precheck line. I asked the TSA person who first looks at your ticket and ID about it, and asked him if there was a line. He said there wasn’t, but to tell the agent who was helping people get through the scanner and x-ray. It did end up saving a bit of time since I did not have to remove half of my clothing. I did have to take my laptop out and run it through separately, though.

  2. 9/2015 at ORD. Pre Check was not to open until noon. But as we were traveling 1st instead of steerage we were in a line of 2 in 60 instead of 2 of 300. Still hat to take off shoes, etc. A polite member of TSA once worked at ORD but was fired for good manners.

  3. Living in Birmingham, AL, the TSA line is frequently closed. Same drill as you pointed out but I always have to remove my laptop. This is also a frequent occurrence at IAH Terminal B. I find it irritating as, at times, I’ll travel with 2 laptops.
