Overhead binYou, Your Bag and the Overhead Bin
If you don’t board an aircraft early enough, there’s a good chance there won’t be any overhead bin space left. And if your bag won’t fit under your seat, the flight attendants or gate agents will force you to check it. If that happens, ALWAYS take out your valuables like electronics, computers, jewelry, medicine, etc. Smart frequent fliers pack a smaller, compact bag just in case this happens.

Passengers should have their own overhead cubbies, related to their seat assignments. Using the overhead in any row but your own is just plain rude.

Ohh…,. I *so* agree with this one, Johnny Jet. And please, people, make SURE that you get a bag tag for it! In a last-minute shuffle one day, with a ramp person trying to close the door, the flight attendant handed my carry-on out through the narrow opening to put it in the basement…. it did not go well! Read about it here on my blog… http://debbiemovestodubai.com/2012/12/13/the-flights/

Those were one of the best travel tips I have come across as it is utmost responsibility to do your duties while on a plane. I will really share your points while I head towards Barbados next week with my family. I

Unfortunately, Johnny, you just can’t fix stupid – even with duct tape (but it can muffle the sound).
We are in the age of entitlement where the only one who counts is thyself… Frustrating to say the very least.
Great column. Keep up the good work!

I have to 100% disagree with you. I pay to check my bag and I have long legs. I do not want anything in front of me under the seat. If it a small purse, of course, I’ll put in front of me, but if it’s my computer bag, it’s goes in the overhead bin. I paid to check bags so I wouldn’t have to worry about this. Sorry!

AA aisle seats on Boeing 737-800 has very narrow space for a small bag, my backpack does not fit so I have no problem putting it in overhead bin. Also have this issue on certain transatlantic flights with aisle seats due to inflight entertainment boxes. Otherwise I agree with you.
