Bring two pairs of shoesEach Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Jean F., who left this tip as a comment on my “10 Things You Don’t Need to Pack” post:

“I generally bring two pairs of shoes, BOTH of which are comfortable, with one that can pass as a dressy shoe. The reason I like both to be comfortable was perfectly illustrated by a trip to Scotland this summer. We went kind of off the beaten path to see if we could travel through time through some standing stones by taking an illegal shortcut through a field that turned out to be boggy. Our shoes were COMPLETELY soaked through, thoroughly drenched. So I switched to my other comfortable shoes until the first ones were dry, which actually took more than a day. There is nothing more miserable than wet or aching feet.”

I advise against taking illegal shortcuts, but I do agree with the suggestion to bring two pairs of comfortable shoes, especially if you’ll be going hiking or somewhere rainy. Thanks, Jean! For more packing tips, check out the full post.

Can’t imagine ANYone traveling with just one pair of shoes. If for no other reason, (and there are many) you want your shoes to air out between werings and overnight may not be long enough. It should also go without saying that whatever you bring along must be tested for comfort ahead of time. You don’t want to find out later that the comfy looking shoes with gazillion positive reviews you got especially for the trip give YOU blisters. There are many great looking shoes that pack flat and aren’t heavy, so don’t look like a dork and wear something nice.
