Don't leave your valuables exposed in a security binAirport security can be a hassle, even with TSA PreCheck (though that helps). But don’t forget that in the process of placing your valuables in a security bin and meeting them at the other side of the scanner, you’re exposing your valuables to a risk of theft. That’s why you should always wait to see your belongings go into the machine before walking through. It’s also why you should never leave any valuables (like money) loose/exposed in a security bin, as an unlucky man found out in Rome in December.

Here’s what happened, as written for View from the Wing: “A passenger proceeding through the checkpoint was carrying money, the police report, to cover medical expenses for a sick relative. He had cash, in envelopes, and placed them in a bin while he proceeded through the metal detector. An older man behind him goes through another metal detector and comes back to collect x-rayed bags ahead of the first man. He sees the envelopes full of money and takes them. He stops for a moment to ponder his good fortune, grabs his own carry on bags, and heads off.” It’s all seen in the video below, shared by Roman police.

In the end, the thief was arrested, but the lesson stands: Don’t leave your valuables exposed in a security bin. Put them instead inside a bag in the bin, and don’t lose sight of your belongings until they’re back in your possession.

When I travel with my husband, I have my handbag with a zipper that is secured with a clasp. For my husband, I have a gallon ziploc bag in the front of his carry on (softside roller so it has outside pockets as opposed to a hardside). Just before security, he puts his wallet, phone, watch, etc. in the ziploc and into the carry on pocket. Bonus is that it is a lot easier once he gets through security because he isn’t picking individual items out of the bin.
