I was reading in our local paper that a beloved resident died last week while on vacation in Jamaica because he got caught in a rip current. Since I know a lot of people are vacationing where the weather is warm and the waters are inviting, I decided it was important to feature this important two-minute safety video. It’s called “How to Spot a Rip Current” and it’s brought to you by Surf Life Saving Australia.

According to the video, the things to look for are deeper, dark-colored water; fewer breaking waves; a rippled surface surrounded by smooth waters; anything floating out to sea; or foamy, discolored, sandy, water flowing out beyond the waves. Rips don’t always show all of these signs at once. Check out the video to see if you can spot a rip.
