Virgin Atlantic is an airline that doesn’t receive as many positive accolades as it probably deserves. You might be wondering if there are any personal or business Virgin Atlantic credit cards to defray your travel costs. The good news is that the Bank of America offers a co-brand Virgin Atlantic credit card. For a limited time, you can earn up to 80,000 bonus Flying Club miles when you apply and meet the spending threshold.

Both Virgin Money and American Express offer Virgin Atlantic credit cards available to United Kingdom residents. However, the only co-brand Virgin Atlantic credit card for U.S. residents (and U.S. territories) is the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard® from Bank of America.

Although this might be your only co-brand option, it’s one of the better airline credit cards. You can also transfer credit card rewards points to your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account at an impressive 1:1 ratio.

Two other transfer-participating credit cards are the Chase Sapphire Preferred and Platinum Card from American Express.

Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard

The Bank of America issues the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard®. It has a $90 annual fee but no foreign transaction fee. This card offers these Virgin Atlantic travel perks:

  • Earn 3 miles per $1 spent directly on Virgin Atlantic purchases
  • Earn unlimited 1.5 miles per $1 on all other purchases
  • Receive 25 tier points per $2,500 in monthly purchases (up to 50 tier points monthly)
  • One same-cabin companion award ticket after $25,000 in annual purchases
  • Signup bonus of up to 80,000 bonus miles in the first 12 months

Being able to earn 50 bonus tier points monthly makes it easier to upgrade from the entry-level Red tier. The mid-level Silver-tier requires 400 points and the Gold tier requires 1,000 points. You also earn tier points on each Virgin Atlantic flight. For example, a round-trip flexible Upper Crust ticket earns 400 tier points.

Earn 80,000 Bonus Flying Miles

This credit card currently has one of its highest and best limited time offers.

You can earn up to 80,000 bonus miles in the first 12 months by achieving these three milestones. First, spending $2,000 in the first 90 days of account opening to get 60,000 bonus miles. Second, add two authorized users to get 5,000 bonus miles (2,500 miles per additional user). Third, spend $25,000 in the first 12 months to earn the last 15,000 bonus miles (7,500 miles when you spend $15,000 and the final 7,500 miles after spending $25,000).

This 80k offer ends October 31, 2019.

Alternative Virgin Atlantic Credit Cards

Maybe getting a new airline credit card isn’t an option right now. If that’s the case, several flexible travel rewards credit cards are a Virgin Atlantic transfer partner.

Platinum Card from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express is currently offering a welcome bonus that is worth more and easier to earn than the Virgin Atlantic Credit Card 80k offer.

When you use the CardMatch™ tool, you can earn 100,000 bonus Membership Rewards points that you can transfer 1:1 to Virgin Atlantic. You only need to spend $5,000 in the first 3 months to earn the full bonus (versus spending $25,000 in 12 months to get 80,000 miles with the co-brand credit card).

Earn 5 Membership Rewards points per $1 on flights booked directly from the airline or AmexTravel. Hotel nights booked on AmexTravel.com also earn 5x rewards points while non-bonus purchases earn 1 point per $1.

Your points are worth 1 cent each when booking award flights on AmexTravel. Virgin Atlantic is also a 1:1 Membership Rewards transfer partner.

As the in-depth American Express Platinum review further explains, this card is a great fit for frequent flyers. Some of the many travel benefits you get include a $200 airline fee credit, Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee credit, and complimentary airport lounge access to networks including Centurion, Priority Pass, and Delta Sky Club.

Chase Sapphire Reserve

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® earns 3 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 on all travel and dining purchases. Non-bonus purchases earn an unlimited 1 point per $1 spent. Your points are worth 1.5 cents each when booking award flights on the Chase travel portal.

But you can also transfer your points on a 1:1 ratio to Virgin Atlantic with the Sapphire Reserve, one of the best metal credit cards.

You also get a $300 annual travel credit, Priority Pass Select lounge access, and a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit. New cardmembers can earn 50,000 bonus points (worth $750 in award travel) by spending $4,000 in the first 3 months. The annual fee is $450 but can be offset by the perks (as is exemplified in this Chase Sapphire Reserve review).

Chase Sapphire Preferred

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns 2 Ultimate Rewards points on travel and dining plus 1 point for everything else. Your points are worth 1.25 cents each when booking travel on the Chase travel portal and you can transfer them 1:1 to Virgin Atlantic.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred perks include primary rental car insurance and trip cancellation coverage. While it may not come with as many travel benefits, it also only has an annual fee of $95. The signup bonus is 60,000 points (worth $750 in award travel) by spending $4,000 in the first 3 months.

Citi Premier

With the Citi Premier, you earn 3 ThankYou points per $1 spent on travel and gas stations. Dining and entertainment earns 2 points per $1. Everything else earns 1 point per $1.

Your points are worth 1.25 cents each when booking award flight. Virgin Atlantic is one of several 1:1 transfer partners. The annual fee is $95 and the signup bonus is 60,000 bonus points by spending $4,000 in the first 3 months.

Redeeming Virgin Atlantic Miles

Here a few of the best ways to redeem your Flying Club miles.

Fly Upper Class to the UK

Round-trip Upper Class (first class) tickets start at 95,000 points in the off-peak season and 115,000 points during peak season. Virgin Atlantic also offers some of the best first class flights. Note that while these award flights may require fewer points than other carriers, beware of the hefty fuel surcharges.

Fly Delta One to the UK

A better option can be booking a Delta Air Lines partner flight. Round-trip fares in the premium Delta One business class start at 90,000 miles plus $1,287.61 approximate tax. The good news about flying Delta overseas is you avoid the fuel surcharge. A main cabin seat in Delta starts at 20,000 miles plus $525.71 in approximate tax for a round-trip ticket.

Fly Delta One Across the United States

Transcontinental Delta One flights like New York to Los Angeles start at 22,500 miles plus $5.60 each way. This cabin class features lie-flat seats.

Fly to Hawaii

A round-trip partner flight on Hawaiian Airlines to Hawaii start at 40,000 miles for economy and 80,000 miles for first class. These low rates are available when flying from the U.S. West Coast. Although this isn’t the lowest award flights available, only having to spend 20,000 miles each way is still very competitive.

Summary of the Virgin Atlantic Credit Cards

In one way, there are several Virgin Atlantic credit cards you can own if you transfer your points on a 1:1 basis. These cards let you earn bonus points on non-Virgin Atlantic purchases. But if you like the possibility of earning Tier Points each month, the one-time 80,000 bonus miles bonus offer, and the annual companion certificate, the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard is worth looking into.
