Today is Giving Tuesday. If there is a silver lining to 2020, I think it’s the constant reminder not to take things for granted. Before the pandemic, not many of us could have imagined that the world’s economy would come to a grinding halt and that doing simple things, like going to dinner or a sporting event, would become off-limits.
Turn on the news these days and it’s difficult not to feel your heart breaking. All over the country, there are people lining up for hours to get food. According to NPR, the coronavirus pandemic has only worsened the problem of food insecurity in America. “According to one estimate by researchers at Northwestern University, food insecurity more than doubled as a result of the economic crisis brought on by the outbreak, hitting as many as 23% of households earlier this year.” It’s mind-boggling that so many people in our country are going hungry.
If you have the means, there are a lot of places you can donate including using your miles and points. I donated last night to St. Jude’s but there are hundreds of other charities to choose from and if I had the means, I would give to them all. Below, I’ve listed a selection of charities and organizations that you can donate to on Giving Tuesday but you can also search for local organizations in your own communities to help even closer to home. Feeding America
This year has been challenging for so many, but this Giving Tuesday, we can all come together to help put food on the table for families. To celebrate the day, Feeding America has set a goal of rallying 6,500 people to make Giving Tuesday donations. Plus, a $200,000 challenge match from a generous donor will help provide another 2 million meals.
Feed the Children
For every dollar you donate $7 of food and essentials will be given, taking your donation seven times further.
LA Food Bank
Thanks to an anonymous donor, your gift today to the LA Food Bank will double in impact. Provide for those who need it most during this unprecedented time. Join the LA Food Bank’s challenge to provide 1 million meals from Black Friday to #GivingTuesday.
Midwest Food Bank
Midwest Food Bank has set a goal of providing 300,000 meals to families facing food insecurity.
The Snack Sack
